[edit] History

In 1986, KLRD began broadcasting Christian music from Yucaipa, California, and went by the on-air moniker K-LORD. In 1994, KXRD was started as a sister station to KLRD.[1] In 1995, K-LORD changed their name to "Air 1" and began broadcasting via satellite from St. Helens, Oregon. In 1999, Air 1 joined with EMF Broadcasting, and finally in 2002, it moved its headquarters to Rocklin, California. Air 1 makes use of broadcast translators to spread the signal across much of the country. As of November 2011, the network lists 90 full powered radio stations and 125 translators of various power levels reaching 40 states.
[edit] Programming/On-Air Staff

Air1’s on-air line-up includes

* Sean and Mandy from 4:00 – 9:00 a.m.
* PST; Coppelia 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. PST
* Ashton 2 p.m. – 7 p.m. PST
* Nikki 7 p.m. – 11 p.m. PST

[edit] Pledge Drives

Because Air 1 is a commercial-free and non-profit ministry, it is financially supported by its listeners. About twice a year, Air 1 holds a pledge drive for several days, encouraging listeners to donate and continue to financially support the station. $30 USD covers about 1 hour of air time at one station.
[edit] Mixology

Since 2003, Air 1 listeners can vote on their favorite songs in a process called Mixology.[2] The program was formerly known as the Air 1 Music Lab.[3] Listeners register at www.air1.com/mix and receive periodic e-mails surveying their opinions of current songs. Each song is rated from a scale of 1 to 5 and listeners indicate how often they would like to hear the song played. Air 1 then compiles the data collected and produces a weekly top song chart where listeners can hear a sample of the song, obtain its lyrics, or click a link to buy it online. Air 1 yearly produces a top countdown from all of the top songs from that year. Past top songs have been:

* "Dear X (You Don't Own Me)" by Disciple in 2010
* "Give Me Your Eyes" by Brandon Heath in 2008
* "East To West" by Casting Crowns in 2007
* "My Savior My God" by Aaron Shust in 2006
* "Take Me" by Hawk Nelson in 2005
* "Blessed Be Your Name" by Tree63 in 2004
* "Run" by Kutless in 2003. These songs stay in rotation for occasional airplay on Air 1.
[edit] Information updates

As of January 2011, K-LOVE's programming is carried on over 440 FM stations and translators in 45 states.[1] K-LOVE claims an audience of 250,000 people each week via the Internet and more than 5 million listeners weekly on the radio network. Some of the most listened to K-LOVE stations are in Chicago, Denver, Phoenix, Kansas City and San Antonio each averaging between 200-400 thousand listeners each week.[2] K-LOVE's studios and offices are located in Rocklin, California, near Sacramento.[3] The morning show broadcasts from Indianapolis, Indiana, as of November 2009. The service uses a number of "primary" FM signals to provide broadcast feeds to other stations and translators. Other DJ's Include Sterling, Larry Wayne, Lauren Lee and JD Chandler. The afternoon show is hosted by Scott Smith and Kelli Caldwell from 4pm-9pm Central Time. Lara Scott also assists as a DJ on Sunday evenings. K-LOVE plays artists such as MercyMe, Third Day, Brandon Heath, Steven Curtis Chapman, tobyMac, Chris Tomlin, Casting Crowns, David Crowder Band, Francesca Battistelli and Newsboys, among others. K-LOVE has a news team that provides national and regional stories as well as positive stories that may not be heard anywhere else.[5] In addition to the news, K-LOVE has a weekly program called Closer Look that discusses topics more in depth. One of the closer look segments is the Pastors Roundtable that features K-LOVE pastors.[6] [edit] History K-LOVE began as a single radio station, KCLB-FM (now KLVR),[7] in 1982, in Santa Rosa, California as a result of the efforts of a former San Francisco disc jockey, Bob Anthony (Fogal). In 1988, coverage expanded after the transmitter was moved to a better location following a fire that destroyed 9,000 acres (36 km2) around the original transmitter site. Encouraged by public support, KCLB became K-LOVE Radio in 1988, and additional stations were licensed and began operating.[3] [8] In 1999, K-LOVE and Air 1 (a Christian music service targeted at younger listeners) were combined under the Parent Organization named Educational Media Foundation. On October 5th, 2000, Colorado Christian University sold KWBI Morrison/Denver, KJOL Grand Junction and KDRH Glenwood Springs as well as 18 translators K-LOVE.[9] The Colorado radio network was sold for a reported $16.6 million. A Colorado Christian University release said the board considered "many offers from Christian, as well as other suitors," but the priority was finding a buyer committed to "top-quality Christian programming."[10] KWBI is now KLDV, and is one of K-LOVE's most listened to signals.[11] K-LOVE uses a network of satellite fed FM stations and broadcast translators to carry the signal across much of the United States. Almost all of K-LOVE FM translators (FM Radio Stations) across the nation do carry RDS/RDBS-EON service. Analog FM radios in RDS/RDBS mode will get radio information displayed on most K-LOVE stations. K-LOVE stations are owned by EMF. Because EMF is a non-profit entity, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has granted waivers of the requirement that each station have a local studio in the community of service. Only one FM station in Tucson, AZ USA supports HD Radio, KLTU 88.1-HD1 K-LOVE and 88.1-HD2 Air1. On October 1, 2007, Mike Novak was named CEO and President of EMF, K-LOVE, and Air 1, replacing Dick Jenkins, founder of EMF Broadcast Networks.[12] In June 2008, Mike Novak, President of K-LOVE and Air 1, announced on air that their previous spring pledge drive was less than successful, and they were being forced to stop all expansions, freeze hiring, make cutbacks, and even sell a network radio station.[citation needed] On March 28, 2009, it was announced that Jon and Sherry Rivers will no longer be hosting K-LOVE's popular morning show, due to family issues. Host Lisa Williams has assumed the duties of hosting the program, and was later joined by Eric Allen. It is unknown if Jon and Sherry will return to K-LOVE. In a letter posted on K-LOVE's website, Jon and Sherry said their sudden departure was due to Jon's addiction to pain pills for headaches that had gone on for the previous couple of years.[13] In April 2009, K-LOVE became available as an "app" for the iPhone to further enhance listener availability to the programming. Apps for the Android and Blackberry devices were added in May and October 2010 respectively. In May of 2011, K-LOVE came on the air on WKLV Port Chester, which covers New York City. The WKLV signal originates from a new transmitter site atop the Trump Plaza building in New Rochelle. This is now the largest market that K-LOVE can be heard in.[14] [edit] Ministry K-LOVE is more than just a radio network, it is also a ministry. By providing positive music and inspirational stories, K-LOVE helps people draw closer to God. Unlike other radio stations, K-LOVE has a full time ministry team that processes over 100 phone calls a day of listeners in need of guidance. The pastors and staff at K-LOVE pray for over 1,000 prayer requests every day, and on average, intervene in one suicide case per day.[15][16] People can submit prayer requests online or over the phone.[17] K-LOVE also partners with other ministries and donates air time and web site space to them. Some of the ministries include International Cooperating Ministries, Compassion International, Food For The Hungry, World Vision and Faith Comes By Hearing.[18] [edit] Finances K-LOVE is governed by the Educational Media Foundation, a 501(c)3 not-for-profit ministry. No individual owns any stock in the corporation, which is held for charitable purposes. The Board of Directors at large serve without compensation for rotating four-year terms, and a person with supervisory accounting experience holds one of the board positions.[19] In addition, EMF is a member of the Evangelical Council on Financial Accountability (ECFA). Founded by Billy Graham, the ECFA oversees EMF's financial affairs, ethics and reporting standards.[20] K-LOVE is a non-commercial radio station. Therefore, most of K-LOVE's funding is provided by donations. The majority of donations are made during seasonal pledge drives (usually in the spring and in the fall).[21] Donations are also made by businesses through the Business Partner program. K-LOVE Business Partners are local and national businesses that support K-LOVE Radio and have made either one-time or ongoing corporate donations[22] Funding for special projects such as signal expansion come from large donations given to the K-LOVE Air1 Foundation.[23]
