BOUNDARIES, Alex! Many predators have forward-facing eyes that give them excellent depth perception and focus. Prey animals, on the other hand, often have eyes on the sides of their heads to boost their panoramic view. Deer, for example, can see an impressive 280° around them—basically the visual equivalent of side mirrors on steroids.

But horses? Horses rein (thank you) supreme. With eyes that are both side-facing and enormous, they can see almost everything. ...Almost. Sorry, cowboy.

Do NOT miss bonus in comments😲 Giant Malaysian Katydids, also called Long-legged Katydids, are super-sized insects found on the mountain slopes of tropical Malaysia and are related to grasshoppers and crickets.

Males of this species are slightly smaller but can produce an incredibly loud sound when calling for a mate or trying to startle a would-be predator. Katydids will also stand perfectly still to imitate a leaf to avoid detection. Despite their extreme size, these insects are harmless to humans and you should probably start telling everyone how amazing they are, whenever you get the chance.

DID YOU KNOW? Killer whales (orcas) have been observed bringing fish to humans they seemed to perceive as struggling or in need—a rare and moving example of interspecies compassion. Yet among our own species, we are deliberately allowing children to starve to death in Gaza as the entire world watches. The Israeli military controls all access into Gaza, and for months imposed a near-total blockade. Even now, most food and medical aid remains severely restricted.
No child should go hungry because of politics or war, and compassion should not stop at borders. We are all human.

Please support front line organizations like the Palestine Children’s Relief Fund (PCRF) that are still trying to provide life-saving aid to Gaza’s children—despite the blockade. Please share this message. Stay focused on what really matters: the lives of innocent children who are starving and suffering. The world is watching. Our voices and peaceful actions can help make a difference.

🔥Happy National Avocado Day!🥑🐸 Here's a frog that looks NOTHING like one (excuse me for playing it safe). Black Rain Frogs (Breviceps fuscus) only have one look: grumpy. These small, compact frogs can only be found at the southern coast of Africa at high elevations. Short, inward-facing limbs make rain frogs excellent diggers, and they spend much of their life underground in their homemade burrows. ❤️ Much of the habitat is on protected land, but they still face threats from non-native plants and animals.

Today is International Tiger Day🐯 This comic I created with Born Free USA remains some of my proudest work—shining a light on the suffering that wild animals, especially big cats, endure in the exotic pet trade.

As a conservation cartoonist, I believe art can be a force for change. And this series helped raise awareness at a critical time—contributing to national advocacy efforts that led to the passing of the Big Cat Public Safety Act in 2022.

Thanks to that legislation, it’s now illegal for private individuals in the U.S. to keep lions, tigers, leopards, and other big cats as pets, and public contact with cubs has been banned. That’s a huge step forward for animal welfare, and a powerful reminder that creative work can help change laws.

Please keep wildlife wild.

Sharks are essentially colorblind—they can’t see the full spectrum of colors like humans can. Instead, their vision is tuned to detect contrasts and movement, especially in low light. Most sharks are only able to see in shades of gray and dark blue, which helps them hunt in the deep, dimly lit waters they often inhabit. And yet despite all of this, somehow Kevin prevailed❤️

🔥NEW COMIC!🐜🔍Please watch your step. Ants are having epiphanies down there.

Some scientists now believe ants have joined the ranks of animals that possess true self-awareness. Why? Because certain species have passed the mirror test—a classic experiment where a visible mark is placed on an animal in a spot it can only see with a mirror. If the subject tries to remove the mark, it suggests self-recognition. (Like spotting spinach in your teeth… but more existential.) This rare trait was once thought to be limited to a few intelligent mammals and birds—such as great apes, elephants, dolphins, and crows. Welcome to the club, little ones!

Happy World Whale and Dolphin Day!🐬🐳 Turns out dolphins don’t just talk with clicks and whistles—they also get to know each other by tasting p*e.

Yep.

When one dolphin swims through another’s urine trail, it opens its mouth just enough to sample the chemical cocktail. A 2022 study found that dolphins can actually recognize who p*ed based on unique chemical cues—kind of like reading a name tag… with your tongue (don't do that). While humans rely on sight or sound, dolphins go straight for the flavor profile. No high-fives—just a mouthful of facts!
