Politeness isn’t just a habit here in Canada—it’s practically a personality trait!
When I first arrived in Canada, I thought I was prepared for everything: the cold, the food, and also the politeness. But one thing was that I didn’t know how far they go with being ‘polite’.
The first shock? People saying thank you to the bus driver while getting off. I couldn’t believe it. Like, thank you for what? For driving you? Isn’t that their job? A paid job? Yet, every single passenger, would say it. At first, I just quietly got off the bus, because why??🙄But now, I’ve eventually joined in—and you know what? It felt… nice😀
Then there’s the door thing. Canadians will hold a door open for you from what feels like a kilometer away. This led to several awkward moments of me jogging to the door to avoid making them wait too long.
And finally—sorry. Canadians say sorry for EVERYTHING. You bump into someone? They say sorry. Drop something near a stranger? They apologize as if they caused it. It’s like a reflex here. Honestly, I’m still learning to do this.
However, It’s just kind of heartwarming. It’s one of those little things that makes Canada so special and beautiful😍
But hey! I’m still learning all the rules here.
