Just a reminder that we have not went anywhere! There has just been not a lot of active weather in our area of the country (Tennessee). Severe weather season is in winddown effect right now outside of popup summer showers.

If this weather pattern changes I will let you know! For now enjoy the summer and stay hydrated when outdoors!

Severe weather expected today for pretty much all of Tennessee. For us here in southeast TN/N GA/NE AL our tornado threat will be the highest especially during this first round. First round of storms could have discrete supercells that could rotate, second round will be more of a line of storms where the primary threat is wind. Be weather aware!

🚨 Severe Weather Alert: Elevated Supercell Potential May 15–25

The latest CFSv2 guidance from Northern Illinois University (NIU) highlights a concerning uptick in the Supercell Composite Parameter (SCP) across the Central Plains and Mid-South during the period of May 13–26, 2025. Elevated SCP values suggest a favorable environment for supercell development, which can lead to large hail, damaging winds, and tornadoes.

πŸ” What is the Supercell Composite Parameter (SCP)?
The SCP is a composite index that combines key atmospheric ingredientsβ€”directional shear, speed shear, and instabilityβ€”to assess the potential for supercell thunderstorm development. Higher SCP values indicate a greater likelihood of supercell formation.

πŸ—“οΈ Forecast Highlights:

May 15–17: Increasing instability and wind shear across the Central Plains.

May 18–21: Potential for organized supercell activity extending into the Mid-South.

May 22–25: Continued elevated SCP values suggest sustained severe weather potential.

πŸ“ Areas of Concern:
Regions within the Central Plains and Mid-South, including parts of Oklahoma, Kansas, Missouri, and Tennessee, should remain vigilant as conditions evolve.

While this is a very early stage system/pattern and a lot is unknown, severe weather season is really about to ramp up as we roll into peak season!

πŸ“’ Stay Informed:

Monitor local weather forecasts and alerts.

Review your severe weather safety plans.

Ensure you have multiple ways to receive warnings.

StormLabz Severe Weather Update – May 8, 2025 | 4:43 PM EST
SPC Mesoscale Discussion #0746
Area of Concern: Central and East Tennessee | Tennessee Valley Region

The Storm Prediction Center (SPC) is monitoring the Tennessee Valley, including Central and East Tennessee, for the potential issuance of a Severe Thunderstorm Watch. While no watch is currently active, the environment continues to become more favorable for severe storm development through the evening hours.

Summary of Current Conditions:

A broad zone of moderate instability and wind shear extends from central Kentucky through northeast Mississippi into the southern Appalachians.

Supercells have already developed across the region, producing large hail with multiple reports of 1.00" to 2.50" diameter stones.

Storm coverage is expected to increase, which may lead to clustering and bowing segments, increasing the threat for damaging winds.

Most Probable Hazards (per SPC):

Hail Size: 1.50" to 2.50" diameter

Wind Gusts: 55 to 70 mph

Tornado Intensity: Up to 95 mph (isolated EF-1 potential)

Timing:
Through late afternoon into the evening

Locations of Interest:
Knoxville, Chattanooga, Cookeville, Crossville, and surrounding areas

Recommended Actions:

Closely monitor local weather updates from StormLabz and official sources

Have multiple ways to receive alerts (NOAA Weather Radio, mobile alerts, local news)

Be prepared to seek shelter if a warning is issued
