On a warm morning in Bend, three cars drove into the Central Oregon Community College parking lot. One carried a college president and his crew, another carried a curious journalist and one more carried a friend to support. Each had their own mission; to raise awareness, write an article and help a friend.

I had the pleasure of running with Clackamas Community College president Tim Cook on day 16 of his 50-day 1500 mile run.

Cook started his run to all 17 community colleges in Oregon on June 15, averaging 32 miles a day. Since that point, not a single day has been spent without him running at least 20 miles.

Before beginning his coaching career, Wegner obtained his Bachelor of Science degree in English studying at Western Oregon University from 1971-1976.

“Coach Wegner’s impact extended far beyond the basketball court,” said Jim Martineau, the Athletic Director for the college. “He was an educator at his core, loved teaching and mentoring. His influence will live on in every life he touched.”

You may have missed the cake, but it’s not too late to celebrate 50 years with Clackamas Community Colleges Environmental Learning Center.

The ELC is an area of CCC which provides opportunities for hands-on experience for anyone from preschoolers to professionals. This includes an observatory and some wetland habitats.

On May 21, friends and contributors to the ELC wished it a big happy birthday with a gathering and a talk from Gerald Herrmann, a man who was essential in the program’s birth.

Clackamas Community College lost more than $300,000 in grant funding this spring due to Trump administration budget cuts; one CCC student said the cuts will mean she’s not transferring to Portland State University.

The biggest loss was for the Bridges to Baccalaureate Training Program, which gives underrepresented students the chance to pursue majors and careers in science, technology, engineering and math by giving them tuition money and a stipend to cover their living expenses when transferring to Portland State University.

Jessica Niemetz is a CCC student who joined the program last year. The sudden end of the program has had a direct impact with Niemetz’s plans to transfer.

Clackamas Community College is in the early planning stages of a large-scale renovation project that will upgrade its outdoor sports facilities, including a new turf soccer field and an Olympic-style track.

The passing of bond measure 3-613 in November 2024 approved a certain amount of money to go towards athletics, and a team was formed to put together to develop conceptual designs for the upgrades. The team compiled a list of proposed features and improvements, which will be narrowed down by the end of June depending on the available budget. This will then start the direction of the project.

“We’ll come up with however much money it’s going to cost and then we’ll launch a more formal process to get the work done,” said Dale Kuykendall, the project executive at Wenaha Group Construction Management & Consulting.

Big changes are underway for outdoor enthusiasts and students alike at Clackamas Community College, as the school is working on major upgrades for the 2.1-mile-long Douglas Loop Trail.

The Douglas Loop Trail is a popular semi-paved trail that loops around the college. It’s accessible to anyone and provides a scenic route for activities such as walking, biking or running around campus.

CCC has hired land surveyors thanks to the bond that passed in November of 2024. They have been working around the loop to map out the trail in order to reach a collective understanding on how to improve the path altogether.

For over 40 years Laurie’s Books has been a cornerstone of Oregon City, a welcoming place for readers of all ages to go and find books both used and new. But in an era dominated by Amazon and Barnes & Noble, the local bookstore has been forced to close.

Rekha Burns, owner of Laurie’s Books, came to America in her late twenties after spending years helping the vulnerable children of her native country, India.

But now, after three short years of owning the bookstore, a lifelong dream of Burns, she has been forced to close the doors after another increase in rent.

“I feel terrible. The store survived COVID-19 but I’m not able to save it,” said Burns, who has already been forced to move the building due to an increase in rent in 2021, which meant moving more than 100,000 books across the city to a new location. Her husband Louis spent months building shelves and stands.

A few athletes have found their way to Clackamas Community College by non-traditional means. As of the last few years, schools have made it easier for students to transfer. This is proving true in athletics, too.

As a volleyball player, I committed to Everett Community College my senior year of high school. That’s where I played my first collegiate season before deciding that I did not wish to continue my time there.

Being unwilling to give up volleyball, I moved home and reached out to the team here at CCC, and I was able to join them this spring season.

Transferring was a bit of an odd process. When an athlete is being recruited before college, it is their responsibility to make their presence in their sport known online. The coaches often take it from there.

Loud feedback and rock music blared at the 9th annual Garage Band Competition held in the Niemeyer Center at Clackamas Community College on April 19.

Ten bands played in the competition and they all played one song for the judges, who were faculty in the music department. After the bands played, the judges gave their thoughts and advice on how to play better.

The prizes were studio time and a scholarship courtesy of the college.
