It’s no secret that athletes and injuries are drawn to each other like moths to flame — and it’s certainly no secret to Clackamas Community College’s athletic trainer, Kevin Arizo.

Arizo has been at CCC since 2007, putting him in his 18th year at the school. During that time, he’s seen no shortage of athletes and all their individual issues.

It was in high school that Arizo realized he wanted to go into the field, while dealing with injuries of his own.

“I hurt my knee in high school as a sophomore, and then my junior/senior year I worked with my athletic trainer. Like, I did my rehab with him, and then I kind of, not shadowed him, but kind of learned what he was doing, and I would help him. And then he gave me a job, and he paid me my senior year,” Arizo said.

Baseball season seems far away. Thanksgiving is around the corner and Mariah Carey is slowly but surely melting. Even with those factors in play, there’s no issue springing ahead to take an early look at what’s happening beyond the batter’s box.

Cougars baseball doesn’t take its first at-bat until February, just in time for early spring flowers to bloom.

While last season wasn’t exactly a home run with a 10-6 record at home and a 5-15 record for away games (15-21 overall), there were still bright spots. They held a sustainable on base percentage of .364, batting .232 as a team with a total of 151 runs through the season. This year, the team looks to maintain these numbers and hit on some areas where they previously lacked.

Nearing the end of a disappointing season, Oregon State hosted Sam Houston State for their final home game on Saturday, Nov. 8. Despite struggles, a light appeared at the end of their tunnel as the Beavers were coming off two straight wins under interim head coach Robb Akey. Fans were hopeful they could extend this win streak to three on the team’s senior night.

Junior QB Maalik Murphy initially held the starting job. Coming off last season at Duke where he threw 26 touchdowns and 12 interceptions, fans were hopeful of Murphy’s abilities. However, Murphy struggled in the spotlight, throwing only nine touchdowns and eight interceptions.

Sophomore backup QB Gabarri Johnson stepped up to help the Beavers win their last two games. With this being the final home game of the season, Johnson would start.

With funding cuts hitting S.N.A.P., Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program from the government shutdown, almost 42 million Americans have been left without food stamps. More than 750,000 of those SNAP recipients are Oregonians.

Despite financial support from the Associated Student Government, the college is still taking measures to make sure that the pantries at all three campuses are stocked.

“There is a college-wide food drive to bring in both funds and food to all three campuses,” said John Ginsburg, Director of Student Life at the college. “ASG does fund the pantry and has funded it for several years to the tune of $3,000 per term.”
