Soup Joumou is a traditional Haitian soup with deep cultural and historical significance. It’s especially important on January 1st, Haiti’s Independence Day, commemorating the country’s liberation from French colonial rule in 1804. Formerly reserved for French colonists, Soup Joumou became a powerful symbol of freedom and resilience once enslaved Haitians gained independence.

🥣 What Is Soup Joumou?

Soup Joumou is a hearty, aromatic squash-based soup with:

Winter squash (often calabaza or pumpkin)

Beef (typically stew meat)

Root vegetables like carrots, turnips, potatoes

Cabbage

Pasta (usually spaghetti or macaroni)

Spices and herbs such as thyme, garlic, cloves, and Scotch bonnet pepper

---

🇭🇹 Traditional Recipe (Basic Version)

Ingredients

1–2 lbs beef stew meat (with bones preferred)

1 medium calabaza squash or pumpkin (peeled, cubed)

2 large carrots (sliced)

2–3 potatoes (peeled, cubed)

1/2 small cabbage (shredded or chopped)

1 small turnip (optional)

1 onion (sliced)

3–5 garlic cloves (minced)

1 stalk celery

1 Scotch bonnet pepper (whole)

1 tsp thyme

2 tbsp epis (Haitian seasoning base)

1/2 cup macaroni or broken spaghetti

Lime or vinegar (to clean the meat)

Salt and pepper to taste

Oil

Instructions

1. Clean and season the meat:

Rinse beef with lime or vinegar and water.

Season with salt, pepper, epis, garlic, and thyme. Let marinate if possible.

2. Cook the meat:

Brown the meat in a pot with a little oil.

Add water and cook until tender (about 1–1.5 hours).

3. Prepare the squash:

Boil squash pieces in a separate pot until soft.

Blend into a smooth puree with some cooking water.

4. Combine and simmer:

Add the squash puree to the meat.

Add chopped vegetables, onion, celery, whole Scotch bonnet (do not burst), and pasta.

Simmer for 30–40 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Adjust seasoning as needed.

5. Serve hot, often with bread or on its own.

🔥 Tips

Epis is essential — it gives Haitian dishes their signature flavor. Make or buy it in advance.

Soup Joumou should be thick, rich, and nourishing — don’t skimp on the veggies.

Traditionally, it's a communal dish shared with family and neighbors.
