Exactly how I paid less for the exact same hotel 👇🏻

I didn’t think anything of it when I booked.

We were planning a weekend trip with friends, picked a hotel, and everyone just went ahead and booked it.

Same place. Same dates. Done.

It wasn’t until later - when we started talking about what we paid - that I realized we did not book it the same way.

I had something running in the background they didn’t...and it showed me the best hotel deals possible.

💻 What it is
Directo is a free Chrome extension that compares hotel booking options while you search like normal.

You install it once, then go about booking the way you always do on sites like Booking.com, Airbnb, etc.

When Directo finds other options for that same hotel, a little logo pops up and shows you what else is out there.

💸 What it actually shows you
This is the part that matters.

Instead of guessing, it shows you:
• the hotel’s direct website
• prices on other booking platforms
• Directo Deals

So you’re not opening 12 tabs trying to figure out if you missed something.
It’s all right there.

✨ Directo Deals
This is what made the difference for me.

Directo negotiates special rates directly with hotels.
So you’re not just comparing the same price across different sites - you can actually see a lower price that most people never find.

The hotel I booked in Washington DC for two nights:
$593 on the booking site
$394 with a Directo Deal

Same hotel. Same stay. Big difference.

📌 A few things to know

• It’s completely free.
• It only works on desktop since it’s a Chrome extension.
• And the logo popping up doesn’t mean it always found something cheaper - it means it found other options to compare, which is exactly what you want.

🔎 What to do
Search Google for “Directo Extension” and install it.

Then just book the way you normally would and let it do the work in the background.

Honestly, anything that saves money and saves me from opening a million tabs is a win.

Let me save you money on your next trip… 👇🏻

A lot of travel costs don’t come from the big stuff.

They come from all the little “sure, why not?” charges that get added along the way.

Tiny upgrades. Convenience buttons. Extras that seem harmless in the moment.

And that’s exactly how a trip gets way more expensive than it needs to be.

Here are 5 of the easiest ways to save money when you travel:

✈️ Skip the airline bundle
These are designed to look like a deal, but it’s usually 2 things you actually want and a bunch of extras you don’t.
✅ Price it out line by line before you click. Most of the time, it’s cheaper to just buy the one or two things you really need.

🍳 Skip the hotel breakfast add-on
This is one of the easiest places to overspend. Paying $25 to $40 per person for a hotel buffet is almost never the best use of your money.
✅ Unless it’s included or genuinely amazing, skip it and go find a local cafe instead.

⛽️ Don’t prepay for rental car fuel
This sounds convenient, but you’re usually paying for a full tank whether you use it or not.
✅ Fill it up yourself right before you return the car. You’ll only pay for what you actually used, which can save a lot.

📱 Don’t use international roaming day passes
They feel easy, but they add up fast. Paying $10 to $15 a day for data gets expensive really quickly.
✅ Use an eSIM or local SIM instead. It’s usually way cheaper, often faster, and you’re not paying a daily premium for the same thing.

💳 Always pay in local currency
That “pay in USD?” screen is not helping you. It usually comes with a worse exchange rate and extra margin built in.
✅ Always choose the local currency and let your own bank or credit card do the conversion. That alone can save you 3% to 5% on everything.

They make you think you’re saving money…👇🏻

The travel industry is basically designed to get you to pay more than you need to.

Tiny upsells. Convenience buttons. “Recommended” add-ons.

And most travelers fall for them - then wonder why their trip costs way more than they planned.

Here are 5 “convenience” upgrades that are usually a ripoff (and why):

✈️ Airline bundles
They’re designed to look like a deal, but it’s usually 2 thing you want + others things you don’t.
✅ Quick check: price it out line by line before you click. 90% of the time it’s cheaper to buy only what you need.

🍳 Hotel breakfast add-on
$25 to $40 per person for eggs that are aggressively average.
✅ Unless it’s included or truly great, skip it and go to a cafe.

⛽️ Rental car “prepay fuel”
You pay for a full tank no matter what you return it with.
✅ Fill it up yourself before you return it. Only pay for what you use. And save a ton of money (especially with the cost of fuel these days!).

📱International roaming day passes
It feels easy, but it’s often priced like “$10-$15 for a day” when a local SIM or eSIM can cost about that for a week.
✅ Use an eSIM or local SIM - faster data, way cheaper - and stop paying daily for slower data.

💳 “Pay in USD?” at checkout
That screen feels helpful. It’s not. It’s always a worse exchange rate plus extra margin.
✅ Only pay in local currency and let your bank/card do the conversion. Save 3%-5% on everything you buy.

I’m shocked no one knows about these yet… 👇🏻

These are the travel apps I’ve found and use that save us money and make travel better, smoother, and less stressful.

The ones that make you go “wait… why didn’t I know about this sooner?” 👇

🚕 Obi
Compares Uber, Lyft, and others in real time so you always pick the cheapest ride. Same trip, different price.

🏨 Whimstay
Last-minute vacation rentals at discounted rates. Same types of places as Airbnb or VRBO, just cheaper if your dates are close.

🏧 ATM Fee Saver
Find ATMs nearby with the lowest (or no) fees. Way better than guessing and getting hit with a surprise charge.

🚗 AutoSlash
Tracks your rental car price after you book and alerts you if it drops. Rebook and save without doing anything.

📩 Thrifty Traveler
Flight deal alerts that actually matter. Think mistake fares, cheap Europe flights, and discounted business class showing up in your inbox.

🛏 Nappr
Book hotel rooms for 2–12 hours. Perfect for long layovers, early check-ins, or when you just need a place to reset.

None of these are complicated.

They just make travel easier, cheaper, and way less frustrating.

Most people don’t know these exist…but I won’t travel without them now…

We woke up in Cyprus to the realization we’d been burglarized while we slept. It was terrifying.

It also completely reset how I think about travel safety. Now I focus on security and how to make me less of a target - or alert me if I am.

Here are the safety items we actually use - and why they earn a spot in our bag:

🚪 Door stop alarm
This goes under the door while you sleep. If someone pushes the door, it triggers a crazy loud alarm. It’s simple, cheap, and perfect in hotels where the lock feels flimsy.

🚨 Stick-on window alarms
These are perfect for ground-floor windows or sliding doors. If the window opens, the alarm screams - which is exactly what you want in a hotel or Airbnb where you can’t tell if the window lock is actually solid. It wakes you up and draws attention fast.

🔒 Portable door lock
Extra layer for doors that don’t have a deadbolt or just some feel secure. It’s also great in vacation homes where you don’t know who has a spare key.

☠️ Carbon monoxide detector
Older buildings, gas water heaters, space heaters, weird ventilation - you don’t need a “scary story” to justify this. You need one invisible problem once. That’s it.

📣 Personal safety alarm
This is not pepper spray or anything complicated. It’s a loud siren plus a flashing light. The goal is to create a scene fast - draw attention, startle someone, and give you a moment to get away.

🎒 Anti-theft crossbody
Locking zippers, slash-resistant strap, and the kind of design that makes it basically impossible to steal from you without you noticing.

🧳 Anti-theft zipper clips
These are my secret weapon. Tiny. Cheap. Works on basically any bag. Clip your zippers together on your purse, backpack, or luggage so someone can’t just casually unzip your bag.

🔗 Luggage cable lock
Trains, buses, luggage storage areas, hostel lockers, even just linking bags together when you’re tired and distracted.

How to make sure it isn’t you - and what to do if it is (because it happens all the time) ✈️

Airlines can legally bump you off a flight - even if you’ve paid, checked in, and are standing at the gate. Sounds crazy, right? But it’s called overbooking, and airlines do it every single day.

Most travelers don’t realize they have more power in that moment than the airline wants them to know.

Here’s the inside scoop 👇

❌ Who gets bumped first
It’s not completely random. If you:
• Didn’t pick a seat
• Checked in last
• Booked basic economy
• Are traveling solo

…sorry, but you just made the “easy to cut” list.

✅ How to stay off the list
• Check in early (set an alarm if you have to)
• Always pick a seat
• Stick with one airline or alliance when you can - even low-level status gives you priority
• If it’s a flight you cannot miss, don’t gamble on basic economy - lower fare class = lower priority

💸 If you do get bumped
Here’s where you need to channel your inner lawyer.
• Stay calm, stay at the gate
• Ask for the written notice of your rights (by law, they have to give it to you)
• Rebook yourself in the app - it’s often faster than waiting in line
• Ask if they can put you on another airline. They can, but won’t unless you push
• Never take a voucher unless you want blackout dates, restrictions, and an expiration date. Cash is king

💰 What you are owed
• Land within 1 hour of your original flight? No payout
• 1–2 hours late domestic (1–4 international): 200% of your one-way fare, up to $1,075
• 2+ hours late domestic (4+ international): 400% of your one-way fare, up to $2,150

🍔 And if you’re stuck overnight?
Push for hotel, meals, and transportation. They won’t always offer it, but ask and you’ll usually get it.

⚠️ Travel insurance note
Insurance won’t cover bumping itself, but it can cover the domino effect - like missed connections, prepaid hotels, or tours.

Most people don’t know this…

and it takes about 5 minutes.

Not points. Not hacks. Just knowing where to look.

Here’s exactly what I do 👇

✈️ Start with map view
I open Google Flights, put in my departure city… and leave the destination blank or enter a continent.

Then I hit “Explore.”

Now I can see prices everywhere instead of guessing where to search. This is how you find deals you never would’ve searched for on your own.

📍 Check nearby airports
Don’t lock into one airport.

Flying into a nearby city and taking a short train or drive can easily save you hundreds. Same trip, different airport, very different price.

📅 Use the calendar + date grid
After you search a route, click into the date grid (or calendar view).

This shows you the cheapest combinations of departure and return dates side by side, so you can instantly see which days are actually cheaper.

Moving your trip by even a day or two can change the price a lot.

🔔 Set alerts
Once I find something close, I turn on Google Flights alerts.

If the price drops, I get an email. No need to keep checking over and over.

💡 Pro tip
I also use Thrifty Traveler and it’s honestly one of the best travel tools out there.

They send actual flight deals - not just random flights - including mistake fares and deeply discounted business class. Some of our best flights have come from alerts we never would have found ourselves. Bonus: use promo code READYJETROAM for $20 off your first year!

Most people pack only for the destination…
and completely forget to pack for the actual travel day.

That’s why long-haul travel days feel harder than they need to.

✅ For me, these are two different jobs.

My main luggage is for the trip itself.
That’s where I want my clothes organized, compressed, clean, and easy to find when I land.
My personal item backpack is for the day.
That’s where I keep my laptop, plane stuff, comfort items, chargers, and all the little things that make a very long travel day way easier.

That’s what I liked about this Bagsmart setup.

🧳 The Blast 43L Roller Backpack gave me the organized space I wanted for the destination side of the trip. The packing cubes made it easy to group things by how I’d use them later, compress everything down, and keep my stuff from turning into a mess.
And I liked that the 43L rolls when that’s easiest, can go on my back when I need it to, and fits in the overhead so I can stay carry-on only.

🎒 The Blast Pro 38L made the travel day itself easier.
It kept everything organized and easy to grab, my laptop was quick to access, and I didn’t have to dig through my whole bag every time I needed something.
That’s really the point.
The right luggage should not just hold your stuff.
It should make the whole day easier.
