Stop overpacking! #10 alone saves so much room 👇🏻

After 7 years of full-time travel, I can tell you exactly what never deserves space in your suitcase. These are the things that waste room, add weight, and make packing way harder than it needs to be.

Here are 10 things you can confidently leave at home:

❌ Full-size toiletries
They leak, explode, or get taken by airport security. Start small or buy what you need when you land.

❌ A stack of cash
Better rates at the ATM and way safer. You don’t need to travel like it’s 1998.

❌ A beach towel
They’re huge, slow to dry, and take up prime suitcase real estate. Your hotel or Airbnb will have one, and if not, local shops do.

❌ More than one handbag
One good crossbody does literally everything. No matching required.

❌ Jewelry you’d be sad to lose
Travel is not the time for heirlooms. Bring pieces you will not cry over.

❌ A hair dryer
They’re bulky, they blow fuses, and they never work well with foreign outlets. Use the one where you’re staying.

❌ A different outfit for every day
Pick a simple color palette and mix. Nobody will remember what you wore.

❌ Too many gadgets and chargers
You only need one universal adapter and the essentials. Don’t bring the whole Apple Store.

❌ “Just in case” items
If the emergency only exists in your imagination, it doesn’t belong in your bag. Anything you actually need can be bought.

❌ More than 3 pairs of shoes
One for walking, one for beach or pool, one that dresses up. Anything more is dead weight.

What I regret from my worst flight ever…

Not the turbulence. Not the screaming baby. It was what I was wearing.

At least I learned from my mistakes.

So if you’re flying, here’s what to avoid… and the reasons you probably haven’t thought of 👇🏻

❌ What not to wear on a plane:

• Shorts or skirts - A kid sat in my seat before me and left something wet. And sticky. Lesson learned. You do not want direct skin contact with airplane fabric.

• Tight waistbands - seems so obvious but… 🤷‍♀️. Planes are uncomfortable enough. Don’t torture yourself even more.

• High heels - cute in theory. In practice? You’ll regret them when you land and your swollen feet won’t go back in them. Also: not great in an emergency.

• Strong perfume - you’re in a tin can with strangers’ noses. Just don’t.

• Offensive logos – airlines can make you cover up or change. Why risk it? Save the edgy tee for after you land.

• Open-toed shoes - your feet will freeze. And trust me: airplane bathrooms are not a place you want exposed toes.

• Complicated belts or buckles - every bathroom trip becomes a wrestling match. And TSA is already slow enough.

✅ What to wear instead:
• Loose joggers or stretchy jeans
• Compression socks
• A soft, breathable tee
• A zip-up hoodie or half-zip fleece (layers are key - one minute you’re sweating, the next you’re freezing… who controls those temps??)
• Supportive sneakers or slip-ons
• A scarf or pashmina for warmth (and makeshift pillow)
• A f***y pack or crossbody for essentials
• Wax earplugs and a soft eye mask
• Dark, neutral colors that hide spills and mystery stains

3 rules I always follow now👇🏻

I’ve eaten my way across 95+ countries without getting sick… except that one time in Cape Town.

The restaurant had just had a power outage.
The waitress brought us water and said, “We’re having trouble keeping things cold.”
So what did we do?
Ordered oysters. 😬

It’s the only time I’ve gotten food poisoning in 95+ countries. And it was 100% avoidable.

We weren’t thinking. Now I always follow these 3 simple rules to stay healthy when trying local food:

✅ Watch how the food is cooked (and skip buffets!)
I love street food, but I stick to stalls where I can see it being cooked fresh and hot. I skip anything that’s been sitting out too long collecting flies, bacteria, or who-knows-what under a lukewarm heat lamp. Buffets are the worst offenders.

✅ Be smart about water
In places where the tap water isn’t safe, I never get drinks with ice and always use bottled water for brushing teeth. It’s an easy habit to forget.

✅ Avoid raw food when you’re unsure
I love sushi and ceviche, but I save it for places with good refrigeration, high turnover, or great reviews. In hot climates or iffy power situations, I keep it simple.

These are big changes 🏰

Stamps and free entry are out and facial scans, fingerprinting, and entry fees are in.

🇪🇺Europe is rolling out two major new systems for non-EU travelers. One will slow things down at the border, at least initially. The other will stop you from even getting on the plane if you’re not prepared.

Here’s what you need to know 👇🏻

1️⃣ EES (Entry/Exit System)
Launched October 12, 2025
This replaces traditional passport stamping. Instead, when you enter or exit the Schengen Area, your fingerprints and facial image will be scanned and logged electronically.

✅ Applies to all non-EU travelers, including Americans, Canadians, Australians, Brits, and more
✅ Tracks your entries, exits, and total time in the Schengen Zone
✅ Aims to reduce overstays and improve border security
📌 You don’t need to do anything in advance. This happens automatically at the border
📌 Expect longer lines at first as border systems adjust

2️⃣ ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorization System)
Expected in late 2026
This is a separate system. It’s not a visa, but you will need to apply online, pay a fee, and get approved before your trip.

✅ Applies to travelers from visa-free countries like the U.S., Canada, and Australia
✅ Required for most top destinations in Europe
✅ Costs €7 and is free if you’re under 18 or over 70
✅ Valid for 3 years or until your passport expires
✅ Most applications should be approved quickly, but it might take a few days
📌 You must apply in advance or you will not be allowed to board your flight

If you’re planning a trip to Europe in 2025 or 2026 or beyond, this affects you. Be prepared so you don’t get turned away!

🎁 Once your flights are booked, make sure you’re packing smart too. Comment GUIDE and I’ll send you our free packing guide based on what we actually carry after 90+ countries.

Stop wasting money… 👇🏻

Most people search one route, one airport, one set of dates… then pay whatever the first screen shows.

Our cheapest flights usually start somewhere else.

We still book direct with the airline, but we use these “weird little” tools to find the price drops, weird routings, and under-the-radar deals first:

🧠 ITA Matrix
This is where we go when we want control. We use it to filter super specific stuff: only certain airlines, certain connection airports, max layover length, and finding weird routings that are cheaper for no obvious reason. Then we take that exact flight info and book direct.

🗺️ Skyscanner “Everywhere”
This is for when the goal is “cheap flight” more than “specific place.” We search by city (not airport code), use “Everywhere” or “whole month,” and let it show us the cheapest countries, cities, and date combos. It’s how we find those random, shockingly cheap routes we never would’ve searched for.

🚨 Secret Flying
Pure chaos in the best way. We use it to catch mistake fares and flash sales that don’t stick around long. If something looks amazing, we immediately sanity-check it on Google Flights and then book fast.

💡 point.me
When we’re using points, this saves so much time. We run the route and dates, and it shows which programs have availability and what it’ll cost in points and fees.

🧾 Thrifty Traveler
This is one of our favorite alert services for flight deals. We set our home airports, and deals get emailed to us with the exact dates and pricing so we’re not endlessly searching. (Our discount details in comments!)

🗣️ FlyerTalk
This is our hidden gem. People post crazy cheap fares and weird routings that are “good for miles” but also just good deals, period. We subscribe to the deal threads in there and get email notifications when someone drops a new fare.

I’m obsessed with travel products that do more than one job.

We travel full time with carry-on only, so if something comes in the suitcase, it has to earn its spot. I’d rather pack one thing that replaces four than haul a bunch of “just in case” junk.

Here are a few MVPs that help me pack lighter, smarter, and still feel totally prepared 👇

🌬️ Portable fan + power bank + flashlight
This tiny foldable fan lives in my purse and does the most. It cools you down in hot airports and trains, charges your phone when you’re running low, and doubles as a flashlight for dark streets or sketchy hotel lighting.

🧣 Lightweight scarf or wrap
My number one. It’s a scarf, in-flight blanket, pillow assist, sun cover, head wrap, and a shoulder cover for churches or temples. It saves you from freezing cabins and surprise dress codes constantly.

👜 Small crossbody or belt bag
My plane organizer, city day bag, and “keep your important stuff close” bag on trains. Passport, cards, cash, phone, sunglasses - all in one place, hands free.

👗 Simple little black dress
Not fancy - comfy. Beach cover-up, daytime outfit with sneakers, or an easy dinner look with flats and a necklace. One dress, multiple situations, zero overpacking.

🎒 Packable backpack
Folds into nothing, saves you constantly. Daypack, grocery bag, beach bag, and the “we bought too many snacks” bag. Also clutch when you need extra space for the flight home.

I wish more people knew these 👇🏻

The first day in a new city, I’m not trying to “see everything.”

I’m trying to get my bearings and set up the rest of the trip - what we actually want to see, what local food we’re into, and enough history to understand the place beyond the Instagram version.

Every day of the trip is better, more organized, and full of what I actually like because we do day 1 like a pro.

Here are 5 things we do:

🍽️ WithLocals.com
Connects you with locals offering private tours, food experiences, and cultural workshops. It’s the best way to see the authentic side of a city, not the tourist version.

🎟️ Airbnb Experiences
An easy way to do something specific - cooking class, street food crawl, photo walk, local workshop - without planning a whole itinerary. And it’s a sneaky good way to meet other travelers, especially if you’re somewhere solo.

🚌 Hop-on hop-off bus
The fastest way to get oriented without overthinking it. Do one loop first, then use it to hop between neighborhoods instead of burning your legs on day one.

🚶Free walking tour
A quick, low-commitment way to learn the city’s basics from someone who actually lives there. You’ll leave knowing what’s worth your time, what to skip, and where to eat tonight.

🌮 Food tour or market crawl
Just Google “food tour” + the city. It’s the fastest way to try a bunch of local food, figure out what you actually like, and then know exactly which spots you want to come back to later.

The secret hacks we’ve learned 👇🏻

People see us sitting in business class and assume we’re out here dropping $7,000 a seat.

We used to think that too. Business class felt like something “other people” did - rich people, road warriors, hardcore points hackers.

But now we’ve learned how to stop making booking harder and more expensive than it needs to be.

Here is what we actually do behind the scenes to fly business class for cheap 👇🏻

✅ We use Google Flights map view.
Map view lets you put in a region like Europe and see a map of all the fares. If Rome is expensive but Milan or Zurich is cheap, we fly there from the US so we’re in business for 9 hours, and finish the trip by train or low cost carrier.

✅ We look at alternate airports.
Searching Paris CDG-JFK (New York) might show nothing good. Searching by city code PAR-NYC includes all Paris and all New York airports. That is how we found a business class deal on the boutique airline La Compagnie from Orly airport for only $600 - when the big airlines were 5 times the price.

✅ We set alerts instead of guessing.
Business class prices bounce around a lot. One week it is $3,200, the next week it is $1,050. We set Google Flights alerts so we get an email when the price drops and buy quickly when there’s an amazing deal.

✅ We use the right credit cards.
Not just any travel card. Cards that earn flexible points we can transfer to multiple airlines and that do not charge foreign transaction fees. Everyday spending turns into miles, and miles turn into business class seats.

I needed an emergency one…(ran out of blank pages!)

Nothing like checking your passport for a trip and realizing it expires way sooner than you thought - or that you only have 1 blank page left and are heading to a country that require 3. 😲

📅 1) Start with your travel date
Count backwards from the day you fly. Be honest - mail time can add up fast.

⏱️ 2) Figure out which “fast” bucket you’re in
• 6+ weeks out - routine is usually fine
• Less than 6 weeks - pay for expedited service (and I’d add faster shipping just in case)
• Within 14 days of travel - you need an urgent travel appointment at a passport agency or center (not the post office). You have to call and make an appointment asap (at the 14 day mark) - they’re hard to get.

⚠️ 3) Check the 6 month rule before you do anything
A lot of countries won’t let you enter if your passport expires “soon.” Many want 6 months of validity past your travel dates, so don’t wait until it’s almost dead.

📸 4) Get your stuff ready in one shot
This is what slows people down:
• Your current passport
• A passport photo
• Your renewal form
• Payment method the application accepts
If you’re missing one piece, this turns into a nightmare fast.

📬 5) If you’re cutting it close, pay for speed
Pay for the fastest shipping both ways. Not glamorous, but it can save a trip.

🕵️ 6) Don’t get played by “passport in 24 hours” sites
There are legit expediting companies, but there are also a lot of scammy ones. If you’re going to pay someone, make sure you understand exactly what they’re doing (and that they’re not pretending they’re the government).

✅ 7) Submit using the option that matches your timeline
Routine if you have time. Expedited if you don’t. Urgent travel appointment if you’re within 14 days.

Your seat on an oversold flight is worth a lot - and they’ll pay you for it.

Airlines often sell more tickets than there are seats - they know people mis-connect. Most of the time it’s fine…

But when everyone shows up, the airline has a problem…and they pay people to take a later flight.

That’s when you can walk away with cash or travel credit - sometimes thousands of dollars!

💡Note: This only works if you have flexibility. If you’re heading to a wedding, cruise, or anything with a hard start time, this is not your game.

But if have time and want to give it a try, here’s how to book flights that are more likely to be oversold:

✅ Pick peak demand times: Monday mornings, Thursday and Friday afternoons, Sunday evenings, holiday travel days

✅ Use the seat map the right way
A “full” seat map doesn’t prove anything, but it’s a good clue.

✅ Watch the price as your signal
If the price jumps a lot close to departure, demand is high and the airline knows it.

✅ Use ExpertFlyer
This is a tool that lets you see availability and sometimes how many seats the airline is still willing to sell in different fare buckets. It’s a way better signal than guessing from the seat map.

📍 What to do on travel day to increase your chances
✅ Check in the second it opens
✅ Get to the gate early and listen for volunteer announcements
✅ If the airline app asks if you’re willing to take a later flight, click yes
✅ Solo travelers get picked more often than groups. Split your reservation if you’re willing to travel apart.

💰Don’t give up your seat until you know the deal.

Before you say yes, ask:
• “What am I getting and how is it paid?”
• “What flight am I confirmed on and what time do I land?”

If the offer isn’t worth it, you politely pass and sit back down. Simple.

🤫And a little secret: the first offer is usually not the best offer. If they still need people, it goes up.

🧳 If you want to play the “volunteer for cash” game, you have to pack light (no checked bags!) Comment GUIDE for our carry-on packing guide (links included!)
