Orange County Commissioner Mayra Uribe is running for Orange County Mayor. Under Florida’s resign to run law, she must resign from her District 3 seat by May 28 with an effective date no later than August 1.

If she does, voters would elect her replacement in a special election.

If she does not and resigns in December, Governor Ron DeSantis gets to appoint someone to the seat instead, potentially giving him influence over a Democratic majority commission for nearly two years.

Commissioner Uribe says she wants to remain on the Commission through December to vote on major issues like approval for a homeless shelter she’s been championing and budget decisions. We the people argue that by not resigning in time, she’s taking the choice away from Orange County voters and handing it to Tallahassee.

That’s why residents gathered outside the Maitland Library today with a simple message:
‘Resign in time. Let voters decide.’
