The Soup That Symbolized Freedom 🇭🇹

On January 1st, 1804, Haiti became the first Black republic to declare independence and the first nation born of a successful slave revolt.

That day, Haitians celebrated not just with speeches and ceremonies, but with a bowl of Soup Joumou.

Once reserved only for French colonizers, this rich, aromatic pumpkin soup became the ultimate symbol of liberation. Formerly enslaved Haitians cooked it as an act of defiance, pride, and rebirth, reclaiming what had been denied to them.

Today, Haitians around the world still honor their ancestors with Soup Joumou every New Year’s Day — dish that tastes like resilience, memory, and victory.

I recreated this historic soup, honoring its legacy and sharing the full story and recipe on the blog.
