Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin at Magic Kingdom has finally undergone a major refurbishment, and this first look gives us an early preview of what has changed at one of Walt Disney World’s iconic Tomorrowland attractions. In this video, we'll take a closer look at the Buzz Lightyear Space Ranger Spin, what Disney has updated, and ultimately our thoughts.

Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin originally opened at Magic Kingdom in 1998, replacing If You Had Wings and later Delta Dreamflight in Tomorrowland. Over the years, Buzz Lightyear Space Ranger Spin has become one of the most recognizable family attractions in Tomorrowland, which is exactly why this major refurbishment is such a big deal for longtime fans of the ride.

On This Day In History: Indiana Jones Adventure Opened 31 Years Ago 📅

Indiana Jones Adventure: Temple of the Forbidden Eye opened at Disneyland on March 4, 1995, bringing a full-on Indiana Jones movie-style expedition into Adventureland.

The story drops you into 1935, where Indy has uncovered a long-lost temple dedicated to the deity Mara. Tourists (aka us) are invited to explore the site, but there’s one rule repeated over and over in the temple’s warnings: don’t look into Mara’s eyes. Of course, someone always does.

After weaving through the excavation camp and the temple’s booby-trapped corridors, you board a battered troop transport and get launched into a chaotic escape through collapsing tunnels, creepy crawlers, supernatural effects, and near-misses that make the ride feel way bigger and faster than it actually is.

A huge part of what makes it hit so hard is the ride system: the Enhanced Motion Vehicles. They’re designed to feel like a rough off-road adventure, with the vehicle motion selling every skid, drop, and “oh no” moment as you race deeper toward the temple’s dangers.

And like any great Indy adventure, it’s powered by music straight out of the films, using John Williams’ iconic score to make the whole thing feel like you stepped into a live action set.

More than three decades later, Indiana Jones Adventure is still one of Disneyland’s most immersive attractions, and it’s a perfect example of that 90s-era Imagineering sweet spot where story, scale, and ride tech all click at once.

On this Day In History: Splash Mountain Closed Permanently 3 Years Ago Today 📅

Splash Mountain was an adaptation of Song of the South’s (1946) animated scenes. It took you on an adventure with the cunning Brer Rabbit, Brer Fox, and Brer Bear. The attraction was rooted in stories told in African American folklore prior to the Civil War and the end of slavery.

In the ride, Brer Rabbit leaves his home in the briar patch to seek excitement and a “laughing place” in the wider world. Along the way, Brer Rabbit continues to outsmart Brer Fox and Brer Bear, who are his main adversaries determined to capture him.

The ride culminates when Brer Rabbit outsmarts Brer Fox and Brer Bear by using reverse psychology, making them believe it would be the worst idea possible to be thrown into the briar patch. Brer Fox throws him in, resulting in a five-story drop you experienced on the log flume attraction. But, since Brer Rabbit lives in the briar patch, the thorny bushes can’t hurt him, and thus the trickster lived to tell the tale.

The ride led to many classic Disney Parks songs that are no longer heard anywhere in the parks. Such as “Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah”, “How Do You Do?”, and “Everybody’s Got a Laughing Place”.

Love or hate the attraction, it’s important to remember what once was an important classic. It was a massive part of the marketing for the Disney Parks for decades, resulting in a massive presence on the rides final day at Magic Kingdom and Disneyland. The attraction continues to live on at Tokyo Disneyland today.
