On Morning Jazz this morning Bob remembers today the beginning of a milestone jazz label!
It was on this date January 9th,1939 in jazz history 1939 - Alfred Lion produced a recording session in New York City. Boogie-woogie pianists Meade Lux Lewis and Albert Ammons were the stars of the session.
Lion manufactured only a few copies of the recordings for his friends, but demand for the records was great enough that he began making other recordings of Dixieland artists.
This was the beginning of Lion’s famous Blue Note record label. Just about every major jazz artist of the past 50 years has recorded for Blue Note at one time or another.
Founded in 1939 by Alfred Lion, Blue Note is loved, respected and revered as one of the most important record labels in the history of music.
