The shark-mouthed legend that struck fear into the enemy. 🦈✈️
Meet the Curtiss P-40 Warhawk — the rugged American fighter that became a global symbol of defiance in the early days of WWII. Most famously flown by the American Volunteer Group (Flying Tigers) in China, these P-40s with their fearsome shark mouth artwork terrorized Japanese pilots over Burma and China.
Despite being outclassed at high altitude by more advanced fighters, the Warhawk was a tough low-altitude brawler: heavily armed, armored, and capable of taking massive punishment while dishing it out. It was one of the first American fighters to see combat after Pearl Harbor and served on every front of the war.
The Flying Tigers achieved an incredible 20:1 kill ratio in their early campaigns, proving that pilot skill and aggressive tactics could overcome technological disadvantages.
From the deserts of North Africa to the Pacific islands, the P-40 helped hold the line until newer legends like the Mustang and Lightning arrived.
