First, it was plunder and fashion statements, and some native people died. Followed by escape from a history of religious wars, intolerable and oppressive governments, and more natives died...
Until, in the Age of Enlightenment a group of 30-somethings and some old guys who met in bars and salons put to the test the notion of self-rule: enact agreed-upon laws that protect people, educate people as to how this system of government works.
In escaping from a continent beset by near continual war with violent overthrow of the ruling class, these clever kids wrote overthrow of the government into the rulebook.
We participate in a non-violent insurrection every two years by voting--the only time the government is supposed to listen to us.
I have been a legal insurrectionist since the day I could vote.
It doesn't have to be violent, but still, we fight for what is just, and right, and tolerant. We vote as if our freedom depends on it, our rights depend upon it and, now as if our way of life depends upon it.
