Upon first meeting Rachel Kricsfeld, it’s easy to understand how she earned a coveted spot on KU’s Baby Jay mascot team. The recent KU graduate – who stands at 4 feet, 11 inches tall – had to keep her Baby Jay identity a secret for the three years she was on the team.

Rabbi Lawrence “Larry” Karol, leader of Topeka’s Temple Beth Sholom for more than two decades, died on July 6.

In 1984, he began his 22-year tenure at Temple Beth Sholom, the only synagogue in Topeka. He led the synagogue as the sole full-time clergy member — when he left the synagogue in 2006, a congregant told The Chronicle that he was the only rabbi many of the congregants had ever known.

Among the winners were teachers from the Family Education Center of Conservative Judaism (at Congregation Beth Shalom) ; The Temple, Congregation B'nai Jehudah; and Hyman Brand Hebrew Academy (HBHA).
