Law enforcement officers are repeatedly exposed to human suffering, violence, death, and moral conflict. Unlike single-incident trauma, policing often involves cumulative trauma—small, repeated exposures that build over time. Officers may not recognize the impact until symptoms become severe.

Stigma discourages officers from processing these experiences in healthy ways. Instead, many rely on avoidance, emotional numbing, or unhealthy coping strategies. The result is not only personal suffering but also increased risk of errors, strained relationships, and long-term health consequences.
