One of my favorite service opportunities is volunteering at Project Right to Sight monthly vision clinic where every person we serve receives a retina scan as a part of their comprehensive vision exam. Early detection is key to preventing Diabetic Retinopathy - the leading cause of preventable blindness.
Today we recognize World Diabetes Day and the growing impact diabetes has on the health and vision of people in our community. Diabetes remains a leading cause of preventable blindness, yet many early changes in the eye occur without symptoms.
Our club works to protect sight by offering retina screenings for diabetic retinopathy at Florida Lions District 35-O's monthly clinic, Project Right to Sight. We focus on serving community members who have no insurance coverage or financial resources, because access to care should never depend on the ability to pay.
We also support the Florida Lions Diabetic Retinopathy Foundation, BeautyofSight, and the Lions World Vision Institute. Each organization plays an important role in restoring sight through corneal transplants, advancing eye health, and reducing blindness caused by diabetic retinopathy.
If you or someone you know is living with diabetes and needs support with eye health, we are here to help. Early detection can protect vision and change lives.
