Populi Magazine

Populi Magazine is an online publication created by students at the Sally McDonnell Barksdale Honors College for the students of the University of Mississippi, one which we hope you will read and enjoy (see our link below). With this publication, we hope to help facilitate deep-thinking about interesting philosophical issues and to spark interdisciplinary dialogue between students beyond the class

room. We understand the ability of our peers to both amaze and inspire with their unique perspectives, though we also recognize the difference context can make for the reception of ideas. While the classroom offers a certain type of student interaction, the world outside it offers another. We have found that it is the conversations we have around the koi pond between classes, at the computer lab exhausting printer options, and in the library studying at 3:00 A.M. which sometimes prove to be most significant–not necessarily those framed by white walls and a chalkboard. However, because of the hectic nature of the school semester, it is easy to forget to engage with one another and have these important conversations. We would like to give students the opportunity to interact with one another in a way that will hopefully make these conversations more accessible. We intend for Populi Magazine to be a forum where members of the Honors College may express their unique perspectives and engage in philosophical discussion. Each issue of the publication is comprised of four to five essays addressing a certain question or topic and will remain online for viewing. In addition to the online publication, we hold biweekly rendezvous around Oxford, MS at various coffee hubs where we continue the discussions face-to-face. We see this personal aspect of exchange as being extremely important, though we understand that it must be balanced with accessibility. Therefore, we are approaching the publication with both human and digital elements in mind, and we hope that students will benefit in any way they choose to participate.
