This past January, Jane's Journeys traveled to the Hawaiian Islands of Oahu, Kauai, and Maui for a much anticipated winter escape. Joining us once again were WPSD-TV News Anchor Jennifer Horbelt and her husband, Bobby Bonds. They have traveled with us before and always bring a wonderful energy to our tours. Their enthusiasm and curiosity added something special to an already remarkable destination.

Just before midnight in February 2022, a knock at the front door shattered what had been an ordinary evening for Blair and Elena Wrye. The man at the door was a good samaritan who stopped to tell them their shop was on fire. He could see flame inside the windows, and wanted to make sure they knew.

The Bredniak Family didn’t simply set out to construct a barn. They set out to create a place where people could gather, where horses could be trained with excellence, and where faith, family, and fellowship could exist under one roof.

The garden of Rowland and Susan Hancock was recently included in the Smithsonian Institution’s Archives of American Gardens. Now part of The Garden Club of America Collection, the garden’s documentation supports the Smithsonian’s mission to promote “the increase and diffusion of knowledge.” More than a private landscape, it is now a distinguished garden whose beauty carries national significance.

By the time Glenn and Heather Denton walked through the front door, this house had already stood for nearly seventy years, quietly waiting for its next chapter. They moved in on September 23rd, 2001 with their young son and their daughter, Grace, was born five days later. Boxes were still stacked and walls were bare. Two grandmothers assembled a nursery while the new parents tried to catch their breath and get settled in their new home.

Jenni Jarvis doesn’t decorate a room and move on. She lives with it, studies it, and changes it. And sometimes, she changes it again. The Jarvis home, a ranch-style house tucked into Lone Oak, is layered, expressive, and unmistakably personal. Wallpaper makes bold statements. Original artwork fills the walls. Color moves confidently from room to room. Nothing feels accidental, yet nothing feels overly calculated either.

When it comes to Laura White's historic Harahan home, she says one of the two things that sealed the deal for her was the round stained glass window. It’s the only window in the house that isn’t original—though it was when she bought it. “It takes direct sunlight, and had for 120 years, so it was just tired. My fear was it was going to fall out and break into a million pieces. I wanted to be intentional about taking it out.” She commissioned a window professional out of Texas that could build a suitable replacement. “My grandmother was a quilter, and that’s one of her quilt patterns. In the mornings when the sun is coming through, the whole wall lights up with sparkles. Sometimes I’ll just sit on the steps and look at it. I wondered why they didn’t center the window to the stairs… then when I saw the sparkle on this wall, I knew why. They knew what they were doing. It’s like a little miracle."
