Dolly Parton has died at 80, born so poor that the doctor who delivered her was paid in a sack of cornmeal, and she spent the fortune she built giving away more than 200 million books and helping fund the vaccine that pulled the world out of a pandemic.
She grew up in a one-room cabin on a Tennessee riverbank, the fourth of twelve kids, in a house with no electricity and no plumbing. Her father was a sharecropper who never learned to read.
That last part never left her. In 1995 she started the Imagination Library, which mails a free book every month to any child under five who signs up, no questions asked about what the family earns. It has sent more than 200 million books to kids across the United States, Canada, the U.K., Ireland and Australia.
When wildfires burned families out of their homes in her home county in 2016, she did not send thoughts and prayers. She cut checks. A thousand dollars a month for six months to every household that lost its home, part of a relief effort that ran to $12.5 million.
Then, in 2020, she quietly gave a million dollars to researchers at Vanderbilt working on the coronavirus. The official report on the Moderna vaccine credits the Dolly Parton COVID-19 Research Fund as a supporter. The girl who was too poor to afford a doctor grew up to help pay for the shot that protected millions of strangers.
She never made a show of asking who deserved it. Poor kids got the books. Burned-out families got the money. Sick people got the vaccine. To Dolly, a person in need was reason enough.
In a country that can barely agree on what day it is, she was the rare thing almost everyone could agree on. She never demanded you pass her political test before she'd help you. She just showed up, cornmeal roots and all, and treated everybody like they were worth the trouble.
She could have done what most people with her kind of money do, which is buy a bigger version of everything they already own. Instead she spent thirty years making sure a child she would never meet had something to read.
She died peacefully at home in Nashville, her nephew Bryan Seaver announced.
The last book she paid for is already in the mail.
