I had the opportunity to tour the new property (Watsonville Slough Farms) that the Land Trust of Santa Cruz County acquired near Pajaro Valley High School. This land will be transformed into a community park, with trails, bbq pits and possibly a whole lot more. The students from PV High will also benefit from the proximity as well. The school district, city and land trust plan on making a pathway from the school to the park. They are in the planning stages of it now and want community input. Take a tour. Give your feedback. https://www.landtrustsantacruz.org/watsonvillesloughfarm-access/ @ Watsonville, California

BRIEF SANTA CRUZ COUNTY UPDATE

1. Mask ordinance starts tomorrow (Friday) at midnight. People not adhering to the rule will be cited.

2. New Leaf employees in Aptos have been confirmed to have contracted the virus. County wouldn’t confirm number (one journalist said it was at least 7). They will be closed shortly to deep clean, then re-open to the public because they are an essential business.

3. Santa Cruz and Orange County are basically the only counties in California to have re-opened their beaches back to the public.

4. 19 agriculture workers recently tested positive in Monterey county. They made it sound that because they live here year round that it may not be migrant workers who work in the field. However, we all know most migrant workers in the fields live here year round. It was a little deceptive. Kind of like when they said the first person to die at Watsonville Hospital was not from around here. Then he ended up being from Las Lomas (right over the bridge).

5. Hospitals and doctors will be allowed to do operations and procedures again. It was unclear, but I sensed dentists will be able to go back as well.

There’s your update! Enjoy your day. It’s sunny 🌞

Thank you PVPSA and to our amazing military for helping pass out food to over 300 families. The line went from Pajaro Middle all the way back over the bridge to Riverside. Unfortunately, there was only one truck this week and people were turned away, however, next week there will be two to three trucks loaded with food and essentials (diapers). Get there early. @ Pajaro Middle

5 years ago I was introduced to this amazing organization, which offers after school programming for middle and high school. The YouthNow President (pictured with me in the main picture), Dave Grazian is one of the kindest people and so full of heart. I celebrated 5 years ago, now 10 and I look forward to many, many more celebrations! Happy Anniversary YouthNow!

Our Story

Jimmy Dutra, 43, was born and raised in Watsonville, where he attended local schools including Salesian Sisters, E.A. Hall Middle School and graduated from Watsonville High School in 1993. He attended Santa Clara University, where he earned his bachelor's degree in Political Science in 1997. Recently Dutra graduated in May 2018 with his masters from the University of Southern California’s Sol Price School of Public Policy. In 2013 Dutra was elected to the Watsonville City Council and is currently the Mayor Pro Tem for the city. He sits on many boards including Santa Cruz Metro, the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary and is the President of the Pajaro Valley Shelter Services. In addition to his civic duty, he also operates Jimmy's Pumpkins which is located on East Lake Avenue next to St. Francis High. He grew up in 4-H and Future Farmers of America (FFA) and raised beef and sheep until he was 18 and still today attends the fair every year to support the next generation. Dutra is a strong supporter of our youth and has volunteered his time and resources since college working with them. Through his pumpkin patch he has worked with the Pajaro Valley Unified School District, local schools and youth organizations in giving back to the community, as well as donating to organizations such as the Watsonville Police Activities League, CASA, Jacob’s Heart and the Children Development Center located at the Santa Cruz County Fairgrounds. Dutra has a new vision for South County. He will work hard to obtain desperately needed resources and funding for South County. From repairing, replacing and maintaining our roads and infrastructure that are currently failing, to addressing the housing issue, to working to continue finding real solutions for homelessness, to bringing jobs to our area where high school graduates who leave to get a higher education can come back and have a place to use it, to educating our community about healthy living so that we can start beating childhood obesity and weight related diseases such as Type 2 diabetes, Dutra will fight to bring change to our community. He will also be a strong voice with all other county issues and will properly represent District 4, whether it be the environment, libraries, highways or schools, Dutra will work hard to make this entire county a better place for every single person.
