It is with great sadness that I join the faithful throughout Florida and the Church in mourning the passing of the Most Reverend Frank J. Dewane, Bishop Emeritus of the Diocese of Venice.
For nearly two decades, Bishop Dewane faithfully shepherded the Diocese of Venice, serving its priests, religious and faithful with dedication, compassion and a deep commitment to the mission of the Church. Appointed by Pope Benedict XVI as Coadjutor Bishop of Venice in 2006, he became the second Bishop of Venice in January 2007 and served until his retirement earlier this year.
Bishop Dewane’s priestly and episcopal ministry was remarkable in its breadth. Ordained a priest for the Diocese of Green Bay in 1988, he went on to serve the universal Church through the Holy See’s Permanent Observer Mission to the United Nations and later at the Vatican, including service with the Pontifical Council “Cor Unum” and as Under Secretary of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace. He also offered significant leadership to the Church in the United States through his work with the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops and numerous Catholic institutions and organizations.
Here in Florida, Bishop Dewane leaves a lasting legacy. During his years as Bishop of Venice, he ordained 34 priests and 28 permanent deacons, established new parishes and schools, strengthened Catholic education and vocations, expanded outreach to those in need, and faithfully served a growing Catholic community across Southwest Florida.
On behalf of the clergy, religious and faithful of the Diocese of Palm Beach, I extend my heartfelt condolences to Bishop Emilio Biosca, O.F.M. Cap., and to the entire Diocese of Venice, as well as to Bishop Dewane’s family, friends and all who were blessed by his life and ministry.
We give thanks to God for Bishop Dewane’s many years of faithful service to Christ and His Church and entrust him now to the loving mercy of our Heavenly Father.
May his soul, and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.
