– June 16, 1815: Battles of Ligny and Quatre Bras. And during the Battle of Ligny, the 72-year-old Blücher was trapped beneath his fallen horse during a French cavalry charge and narrowly escaped capture. Despite his injuries, he was back in command and marching toward Waterloo within 48 hours. 🐎

On June 16, 1815, Napoleon fought two critical battles that would shape the fate of his final campaign. ⚔️

At the Battle of Ligny, Napoleon personally led the French Army against the Prussians under Field Marshal Blücher. After a hard-fought day of combat, the French broke through the Prussian lines and forced Blücher's army to retreat. It was Napoleon's last victory on the battlefield. 🏆

Just a few miles to the west, Marshal Ney engaged Anglo-Allied forces under the Duke of Wellington at the Battle of Quatre Bras. The crossroads was strategically vital, controlling the route between Wellington and Blücher. Despite early opportunities, Ney failed to seize the position before Allied reinforcements arrived. After fierce fighting throughout the day, Wellington held the crossroads. 💂

The twin battles produced a mixed result for the French. Napoleon had defeated the Prussians, but Ney had not driven Wellington from Quatre Bras. Most importantly, the Prussian army remained intact and was able to retreat in good order. 👊

Two days later, the consequences would become clear. The Prussians marched to Wellington's aid at the Battle of Waterloo, helping bring an end to Napoleon's Hundred Days and his rule over France.

June 14, 1800 & 1807

Two of Napoleon's greatest victories were fought on this day.

At Marengo (1800), Napoleon turned near-defeat into triumph when General Desaix's timely arrival shattered the Austrian army, securing French control of northern Italy and strengthening Napoleon's hold on power.

Seven years later at Friedland (1807), Napoleon decisively defeated the Russian army, paving the way for the Treaty of Tilsit and the height of French influence in Europe.

From the dramatic reversal at Marengo to the crushing victory at Friedland, June 14 stands as one of the most significant dates in Napoleonic military history.
