The Mitsudomoe was adopted as the emblem of the royal family of the Ryukyu Kingdom by the First Shō Dynasty's last ruler, Shō Toku, and continued to be used by the Second Shō Dynasty.[28] There it was called hidari gomon (左御紋). Since it was the royal family's emblem, its usage was once severely restricted in Ryukyu. Ryukyuans who visited Japan shortly after the Japanese annexation of Ryukyu in 1879 were surprised that mitsudomoe banners were flown everywhere.[29] Nowadays the symbol can still be seen at historical sites and cultural events, but is now more widespread in use as a symbol for Okinawa.ew federation patch. Excerpt:
Fire Power! The Reinforced Marine Platoon
Sometime in the early part of 1967 I was on another patrol with a grunt unit running point. I can’t remember if it was 2/7 or not but I went out with a reinforced platoon. Our platoon not only had between 30 and 40 Marines with M-16 automatic rifles but also an M-60 machine gun. This patrol really gave me a sense of the tremendous fire power of a Marine platoon. We had been patrolling all day and just before dusk we passed through a small vill [village]! After leaving the vill and going up a small trail with a slight incline we suddenly heard the sing-song sound of Vietnamese music. It was coming from a transistor radio. The whole platoon quickly stopped and moved off the trail and set up an immediate ambush. Everybody i.e., nearly the whole platoon, was facing outboard with their weapons at the ready and on full auto. As I was on the point, myself and three or four others moved to either side of the trail and faced forward. What happened next was catastrophic! Three g***s walked right into our patrol. There were actually two VC and one NVA. They were sauntering down the trail without a care in the world and listening to Vietnamese music on a hand-held transistor radio. They were walking three abreast and I clearly remember the one on the right had his rifle over his shoulder upside down with the muzzle pointing forward. The one on the left was carrying the transistor radio with his weapon slung over his shoulder and the one in the middle was dressed in an NVA khaki uniform. They were definitely not moving in a tactical formation and had no sense of situational awareness!
Once they came face to face with us and were at point blank range the entire platoon opened fire! All at once! Full auto! The sound was deafening! It wasn’t like being on the rifle range where you heard sporadic fire. I remember firing on full auto and emptied my entire 20-round magazine in one burst. The whole thing took place almost instantaneously. The three g***s had absolutely no time to react. Two of them were killed instantly and fell dead! The other one somehow miraculously ran off even though he was mortally wounded. We found him about 50 meters down the trail ahead of us. He was just off to left of the trail where he fell into a bush. He was perched in an odd twisted position where he died from his wounds. He almost looked like a piece of modern art.
It was an extraordinary encounter and one that I will never forget. My takeaways from this operation were twofold. One was the recognition of the fire power of the Marine rifle platoon. The other was the price you could pay for lack of discipline, letting your guard down and not maintaining situational awareness and using a tactical formation in combat. I was thankful for the disciplined training I had as a Marine.
