Hope Is Alive
An interview with Hope Harris Bellgren
by Victoria Hamelin

Folks on social networking seem to be asking about Loburn Magazine's co-founder and Editor in Chief, artist Hope Bellgren. She's been out of the social networking loop for over a year. But Hope is still alive and well, and spending more time with family these days. She's rediscovered a spark that's always been there and is upping her game in the way of one of her favorite hobbies, sculpting. She's decided to share some of that for those who have been asking about her.

1. So tell us where you've been Hope!

HB~Well to tell you the truth, I lost my mother last year and it's been difficult working through the depression. I'm not a stranger to depression, having lost my husband a few years back also. Both of these people were instrumental in shaping my life as a woman. My mother Martha was a home economics teacher her whole life and she really knew something about everything. We were very close and not having her to lean on has been a real challenge. The loss of my husband was intense too. He was a brilliant artist who worked as a Creative Director for the Franklin Mint. It made me a young widow with three kids to raise which was another challenge before this one came. I felt like I really needed to get away from the mindless scrolling of social media, which was what it had become for me. It was interfering with my grieving and my creativity. This was a great move for me. It's really aided in my recovery. I might return one day, who knows, but for now, this is working for me.

2. So as a woman with a creative mother and husband, this must have been a really inspiring situation for you.

HB~It was in some ways. My mother always inspired me, but walking in her path was no easy feat! That's true of my husband also. I never felt I lived up to either of them creatively. It could be a bit intimidating at times. I feel more like I am really exploring my creativity again, with so much space in my life to fill. I also want to say that my partner in life, which is what I always call her, always pushed me and inspired me more than words can say. Anytime I've been afraid to share myself or my work, she drove me to a higher place. You probably know her, lol. Writer, artist, muse and so much more, Lana Gentry helped me co-found Loburn magazine so that we could share our passion for art and give a hand up to other artists. I really consider her a great driving force in my work. She's been my best friend since childhood. We view the world in much the same way, ( not always though lol) and we're family.

3. So the deaths of both mother and husband have opened a well of emotion it sounds.

HB~Definitely so. You have to make someplace in your darkness for some light. I've always loved working with my hands, and sculpting is something I enjoy. I don't consider myself any sort of master at it, but lately, people have been receiving my work very well, and I'm humbled by that.

4. So tell us about the work you have been doing since your social media break.

HB~Well I've started a new series about Fairytales. Not sure I'm calling the series that yet. Like a lot of us, Fairytales have always been a big part of my life. I mean that in a good and bad way. So fairytales aren't really new in my life, but I've returned to that theme for my recent work. I did an untitled sculpture, inspired by Snow White and my best friend Lana shared it with social media. I was thrilled that it sold right away. Since I was in the midst of doing a whole series, it gave me some energy to work even harder.

5. So what's it like working with Lana Gentry?

HB~ We've always been like sisters, which is to say we are thicker than thieves lol She's a really different kind of person. She's also super opinionated which drives people to think that she's a *****. She can be difficult if she is serious on a subject but it's something I know about her and accept because we are family. But truthfully, she is a very kind and giving person to everyone. But if you are an artist or a creator of any kind, she will impart her magic and pull you out of some dark places if you need it. I've needed it a lot. which means so much to me. And she's always loved me at my lowest and ugliest. I feel the same way about her. Neither of us can imagine life without the other. Lana's been inspiring me all the way back to my youth, so when she became a muse, I was kind of peeved. I was like yeah, well she was my muse first. Haha! A very childish reaction I know.

6. Hey well, we're always childish sometimes. lol

HB~ I know I am.

7. I hadn't seen much of your sculpture in the past. This new work has really blown me away. How much experience do you have with that?

HB~ Well I have always loved working with clay, but I've not ever had any real lessons or experience per se. I'm self-taught, but I enjoy making things and have found great comfort in that of late. So I am just casually rolling with it.

7. I know your kids are also creative and your daughter Amelia, like her Godmother Lana, seems to be popping up everywhere in the works of brilliant painters. You have quite a few portraits done by others under your belt too. How did that happen?

HB~As Lana always says, who knows why people paint us? I'm grateful for all the interpretations I have received since getting on social media. It's been fun. But I am more excited about the paintings and drawings of my daughter. I hope you will include Amelia's art here also. She is a muse, musician and painter. I'm just mad about the painting of my daughter by Rachael Bridge.

8. Oh yes. We love her work around here too. So your sons are musicians, right?

HB~Oh yes. Both my boys Alexzander and Aaron are gifted. All my kids are gifted. Maybe you could print some of my daughter's art here too. Hint, hint. Although all I have on hand is an older work. I'm so proud of them all. They've been through so much but have come out of it very well. They're wonderful kids. Well, big kids. They are all in their twenties now! Hard to believe.

9. So Hope, when will we be seeing your next piece in the Fairytale series.

HB~Well you know how it goes. We'll have to see. There's no deadline. I'm really enjoying the process though so hopefully soon. Also thanks to Septic 420 or the interest in my life! I wish you much success.

Very intense and disturbing images that you only can love or totally dislike. I love when artists are that way: when they get into your guts.
Hope you all tell me what you think; would be awesome knowing your thoughts. 😊
