WASHINGTON (AP) — Two West Virginia National Guard members who deployed to the nation’s capital were shot Wednesday just blocks from the White House in a brazen act of violence.

FBI Director Kash Patel and Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser said the Guard members were hospitalized in critical condition. Bowser said they were victims of a ”targeted shooting.”

West Virginia Gov. Patrick Morrisey initially said the troops had died, but later walked back the statement to say his office was “receiving conflicting reports” about their condition. The governor’s office did not immediately respond to questions about the attack and the condition of the troops.

A suspect who was in custody also was shot and had wounds that were not believed to be life-threatening, according to a law enforcement official who was not authorized to discuss the matter publicly and spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity

A former longtime Texas Game Warden who served in Jasper County and became well known from his appearances on the popular reality television show 'Lone Star Law' has been indicted for a felony crime by a Grand Jury.

The San Augustine County grand jury indicted Justin Charles Eddins, 47, on a charge of False Statement to Obtain Credit in Provision of Certain Services.

Court records show Eddins faces accusations of making a materially false or misleading written statement to Southside Bank during an 18-month period from March 2022 through November 2023. The indictment goes on to read Eddins intentionally and knowingly made a materially false or misleading written statement to Southside Bank, namely using another person's name and credit, with the intent to obtain credit, namely loans, and the value of the amount of credit was $150,000 or more but less than $300,000.

The grand jury returned the indictment October 21, and Eddins was booked in the San Augustine County DetentionCenter. His bond was set at $50,000 and he was released after posting bond.

The charge is a 2nd degree felony. If convicted, he could face the possibility of 2-20 years in prison and up to a $10,000 fine.

Eddins' lawyer said that Eddins is still under investigation by the Texas Rangers.

"Justin Eddins has honorably served the State of Texas for 31 plus years, with over 24 years as a Texas Game Warden with the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department here in East Texas. Justin has been accused of making false statements to a bank with the intent to obtain loans. He denies any intent to defraud and looks forward to clearing his name. We are confident that when all of the facts are reviewed in context, the public will see that this was a matter of misunderstanding, not a crime."

Texas Parks & Wildlife confirmed Eddins no longer works for the agency.
