As we all take time to honor our veterans this week, a program held at the Viborg Public Library last Friday also remembered the efforts of those on the homefront. Did you know that women were not able to wear dresses any longer than 17 inches from the floor or that you could be fined if the heels on your shoes were over 2 5/8 inches high during WW II? Or that British soldiers were only allowed three squares of toilet paper per day? Read more about how those on the homefront rationed and saved to help the soldiers’ efforts overseas in this week’s New Era, on the newsstands today!

As the rest of us anxiously watched the news as powerful Hurricane Melissa set her sights on Jamaica late last month, Linsey Johnson of Parker had more reasons to worry than most. Her mom, Leann Johnson, found herself sheltering in place after several attempts to flee the island failed. Linsey talks to us about her experience of being safe at home while watching from afar as her mother went through the life threatening storm in this week's New Era. Emily’s Hope has turned the tragic loss of a beautiful and talented young woman into hope for so many, including those of us here in Turner County. With help from a request from the Parker Fire Department, a Naloxone stand has been installed in the lobby of Jones Food Center in Parker, with kits available free of charge for all to have on hand in case of an overdose emergency. We also talk to Linda Georgeson, who has taken the steps to make sure that there are kits available in Hurley as well. To find out more about this life saving venture made possible by Emily’s Hope, pick up your copy of this week’s New Era, on the newsstands today!

This Sunday will mark the 40th anniversary of one of Marion’s darkest days, when the town’s elevator exploded, killing three and seriously injuring four others. In this week’s New Era, we remember the night of November 2, 1985, a night that changed the lives of so many and almost left the town without an elevator if not for the efforts of the board and community members who stepped up to make sure that didn’t happen. The Parker School’s Brew Crew is serving up smiles, one cup at a time! In this week’s New Era, we tell you how the school’s Life Skills Coffee Shop fills the hallways with the aroma of freshly brewed coffee as the students make their rounds delivering drinks to staff members. In this week’s New Era, we talk to state record holder Kevin Marsh about his legendary giant pumpkins and find out why it was worth the drive to haul this year’s 1,688 pound pumpkin across the state to take first place at the Pumpkin Festival in Rapid City (hint – it was a LOT of money!). We’ve all been watching with excitement as the new Turner County Courthouse in Parker is starting to take shape. NuEra Steel from Viborg has had a big hand in making that happen by providing the 100 tons of structural steel needed to build the framework for the building. We talk to Matt Graves about how his family business that started on his farm south of Viborg has turned into a successful business now located in Viborg’s Industrial Park in this week’s edition of The New Era.
