The definition of legend is "An extremely famous or notorious person, especially in a particular field." The many people who showed up to help celebrate long time veterinarian Dr. Greg Ver Heul on September 13th all agreed that they were there not only to honor an accomplished doctor and person, but a legend as well. We bring you the story of this amazing man and more in this week's New Era. Call (605) 766-7827 to start your subscription today!

To our readers: I've often said that 75% of putting the paper together takes place on Monday and I've always worried what would happen if something came up that didn't allow me to work on a Monday. I found out the answer to that question this week as I was transferred to Sioux Falls by ambulance on Sunday night and was being taken in to surgery on Monday morning at the time I would normally be finishing up the paper. I am so grateful for my coworkers who scrambled to make sure we were ready for press, but we know that some things may have been missed in the process. We will include anything that was missed in our next edition and apologize for any inconvenience, but hopefully everyone understands! Thank you! ~ Renae Hansen, Editor

It was quite the state fair experience for Roger and Lois Regehr of rural Marion this year! Roger has been on the planning and design committee for the new sheep barn called “The Shed”, and the Regehrs broke it in in a big way, claiming several class wins, the coveted Premiere Breeder award, champion Rambouillet ram, and Supreme Wool Breed Ram over all breeds. In this week’s New Era we bring you the story of the couple who recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary, proving that “the couple that lambs together, stays together”. Cathy Petra is a familiar face to many of us who have seen her as an athletic trainer on the sidelines for the Viborg-Hurley, Irene-Wakonda, and Alcester-Hudson athletic teams, but did you know that she is also a national champion of USA track and field? It was a blow to the community of Irene when they learned that the Irene Bar & Grill would be closing their doors earlier this summer, but they didn't have to wait long for the void it left to be filled. Rat Rod BBQ & Bar opened its doors last week, and in this week's New Era we talk to Jessie Schmidt about his latest venture, including how it got it's unique name. You can read that story and more in this week's New Era!

Many of us remember that awful morning back in March of 2010 when we heard that Spring Valley Lutheran Church had burned to the ground. That wasn’t the only time that the church had faced tragedy that forced them to rebuild though, the original church that was built in 1892 was destroyed by a storm in June of 1904 as well. They have more reasons to celebrate than most as they gather to celebrate their 150th anniversary this Sunday, August 24. Read about how this church rose from the ashes to rebuild their beautiful church on the hill in this week’s New Era. Call (605) 766-7827 to start your subscription today!
