When it came time for Parker High School student Ashlynn Walton to choose a Senior Project, she knew exactly what she wanted to accomplish. Ashlynn lost a close cousin to su***de several years ago, so she made it her goal to raise awareness on mental health in her honor and organized “Run for Tomorrow – Mind Over Miles” - a 5K walk/run/bike that will be held on Sunday, August 10 at the Parker Baseball Fields. The Danish Days Committee has selected Ackerman Heating & Air Conditioning to honor with this year's Friends of Viborg award. In this week's New Era, we talk to Marv and Caroline Ackerman about their business that they started back in 1997. When we asked them how they felt about receiving the award, Marv told us that he didn't feel deserving, but we think that a lot of hot and sweaty Danes would beg to differ when they step into their nice air conditioned homes this weekend! Congratulations to the Ackermans on this well deserved recognition! Read that story and more in this week's New Era, on the newstands today.

With Danish Days just around the corner, in this month's Know Your Neighbor we travel to Viborg to introduce you to the new Viborg Economic Development Coordinator, Paul Christensen. Paul may be new to the Coordinator job but he's been a well known and well loved face around Viborg for many years and has a long history of jumping in and helping out when needed in the community. He's been one of driving forces behind Danish Days and the Avenue of Flags, and his Jerry Lewis Muscular Dystrophy carnivals were legendary when he was a kid! The Preheim name and art go hand in hand in this part of the world, with Greg Preheim being a well-known artist in the area for over fifty years; his murals still grace many of our local towns today. Wife Theresa, also an accomplished artist, has used her art to help express her experiences since Greg passed away in 2018, and much of that work is currently on display at an exhibit at Yankton Area Arts. Former Irene-Wakonda staff member Olivia Barkl’s work is also on display at the exhibit, which will be running through July 1. Read more about Theresa’s journey in this week’s New Era.
