با استفاده از ابزارهای ساده و کوهی در نزدیکی قلعه نندانا در پاکستان امروزی، البیرونی از مثلثات و مشاهدات دقیق برای رسیدن به یک تخمین تقریباً کامل استفاده کرد.

روش او شامل اندازه‌گیری زاویه ارتفاع و فاصله تا افق، قرن‌ها قبل از ماهواره‌ها یا فناوری پیشرفته بود..
