ATTN: PET LOVERS IN PELHAM
Two By Two Rescue’s 5th Annual Barktoberfest is this Sunday in Old Town Helena—Join your neighbors for fun!
by Kellie McKinney
Born in the fall of 2015, Barktoberfest has grown to become one of the most exciting events Two By Two hosts each the year. Held in the Helena Amphitheater, the festival draws visitors from Helena and neighboring areas with good food, unique vendors, a low cost shot clinic, kids’ activities, and of course all kinds of adorable four-legged friends. The first year was a wild success and has only grown each and every year since. The last two years, the event has been held on Sunday afternoon, providing the perfect opportunity to come grab a bite to eat, shop local finds with our vendors, grab a sweet treat at our bake sale, get your dog washed and microchipped and enjoy our beautiful Alabama fall weather. Who knows, you may even get to meet our event Queen!
This year our event is held on this Sunday, October 20th, from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. The City of Helena has again graciously offered the use of the Helena Amphitheater. This venue offers the perfect balance of open fields for the dogs to play and wooded shady areas to escape the sun and enjoy shopping or have something to eat.
A lot of planning goes into this event. Large tasks like getting food trucks to commit to the smallest details of getting hot pink spray paint to mark off vendor spaces. One thing is for sure, our event would not be possible without our wonderful volunteers. There are multiple ways to help with the event. Set up on Saturday, early morning set up on Sunday, greeting our guests, playing with the dogs in the off-leash dog area, cooking food in the concession stand and the list goes on. For those of you who have helped with this event the last four years, THANK YOU! For those of you who would like to get involved, please let us know! You can email Jennifer at [email protected] or Kellie at [email protected] to get plugged in and learn how you can help. Thank you, and we look forward to seeing you this Sunday, October 20th!

THE PASSING OF LISA MASON

We are heartbroken to share the news that award winning morning show personality, Lisa Mason, has passed away due to health complications. Mason was a long time Birmingham radio veteran and spent over 17 years as an on-air personality on WBPT-FM 106.9 The Eagle.

Mason not only served her community on-air with entertainment and news but also hosted and worked countless community events including Do Dah Day, local town festivals, Toys for Tots events, tornado relief drives, annual Boo Halloween Party, and so much more. Lisa Mason and her commitment to the station, community, and her listeners will be dearly missed.

While we mourn the loss of a very special woman, we also celebrate her remarkable life and hope that it serves as an example to young and old alike. For those who may ask what they can do to honor Lisa, you may donate funds in her name to the ASPCA at the following link: https://secure.aspca.org/donate/memorial by checking the “mail a paper card” and including the following information: Recipient is Lisa Mason Tribute at 2700 Corporate Drive, STE. 115, Birmingham, AL. 35242.

We made our second trip to Mikey’s at Fox Valley to try out their sports bar fare—burgers and corn dogs.
The burgers are cooked to order, perfectly, I might add—Michael grinds his beef each day from steak trimmings. From the first bite, you can tell that this is not your typical fast food burger! Moist and flavorful, the burgers at Mikey’s are delicious and served on freshly baked buns with organic lettuce and all your favorite trimmings.
Kim has always been a fan of the corn dog, and Mikey’s takes this fair food standard to a whole new level. Hand breaded Nathan’s wieners formed the meaty center of these cat tail-sized delicacies, and Kim says it was her new favorite place to eat them.
The perfect accompaniment to both her corn dog and my burger were Mikey’s fresh cut French fries which were some of the absolute tastiest that either of us had ever eaten. French fry fans of the world will surely be beating down the doors to this Helena eatery when word gets out—they are truly that good!!!
We finished our meal with another helping of Miss Donna’s bread pudding, and fat boys in Heaven surely sang a chorus as we treasured each and every bite of this dish, which, in my mind, is the best tasting dessert available anywhere in this part of Alabama.
If you haven’t made your way down here yet, come on down to Mikey’s at Fox Valley between Helena and Alabaster on Hwy 17. Dinner only, 5-9pm.

Mikey’s at Fox Valley at the corner of Hwys 17 and 44, just south of Helena, is open for business!
Salads are special at Mikey’s. Made from Southern Cress and Red Oak organic lettuces grown using aquaponics from Southern Organics in Columbiana and served up with all homemade dressings Michael and his staff make themselves. My raspberry vinaigrette was one of the best I have eaten. And I will have to say, I’m not one to talk much about what I have always considered to be “rabbit food,” but this lettuce is a big deal and quite different from salads I’ve eaten at most other restaurants in the area. It was delicious, and extremely healthful!
Operations manager Sarah Brantley insures everything is in order for the day, from making up food orders to making up the wine, beer and drink menus. (Many of the old timers here might have known Sarah’s grandfather, a popular electrician from the area, the late Dan Brantley.)
As well as upscale entree selections like the ones Michael offers at his Southlake location, the menu in Helena’s new upscale sports bar and grill includes homemade corn dogs—one with Andouille sausage— and “maybe the best burgers you’ll ever have the privilege to eat,” said a fellow diner who had just taken the last bite of his big and juicy looking cheeseburger.
Wine prices are by the bottle or glass, and the prices are very reasonable. A generous pour of the house Cabernet will set you back about $6, and it fits right alongside any $10 Cab I’ve had elsewhere.
Kim had a Margarita and said hers was perfect on the rocks with a salted rim.
Kim ordered one of Michael’s delicious homemade crab cakes from the appetizer list ($11.95) along with one of Michael’s organic salads, and I chose the tilefish with a salad and requested the fish to be sautéed in lemon butter. (On the menu, it is offered Cajun style.) The tilefish came out with a light, golden brown crust and the fish was white and flaky on the inside, just the way you would expect it to be out of one of this area’s premiere kitchens.
Also on the menu was a salmon entree I am eager to try at about $16, and a good looking ribeye for a few more $.
Hurry out to Mikey’s at Fox Valley. And come prepared for a warm greeting and a great meal served up by Michael and his friendly, eager-to-please staff—I know we’re going back soon!!!

Hello. I’m Matthew McLain. I live in Pelham AL and there’s been a dog that obviously belongs to someone hanging around our neighborhood the last few days. He has a pink collar on. Can you help me find its owner by sharing a few pics? He is in my backyard and we are feeding him and trying to care for him until his owner is found.
My # is 205-966-1916.
Thanks so much!

12/03/2018

Could Pelham’s favorite son and Bama be on a collision course for the right to claim the National Title again this year? The Sooners and Touchdown Jesus’s boys get a chance to change this epic collision course, but oddsmakers say Bama vs Clemson is the most likely scenario. (Bama holds a 2-1 advantage in the CFP over Clemson currently, 1-1 in title games.)
Bama competes in its 5th straight CFP appearance this season but must beat a tough Oklahoma team to advance, while the Fighting Dabos must tame an upstart Notre Dame bunch to get to the Title match during Clemson’s 4th CFP appearance.
May the best team lay claim to the golden cup for 2018. #ontheroadto18

November 11, 2018, marks the 100th Anniversary of the end of WWI. Veterans Day started out as “Armistice Day” on Nov. 11, 1919, the first anniversary of the end of World War I. Congress passed a resolution in 1926 for an annual observance, and Nov. 11 became a national holiday in 1938. Unlike Memorial Day, Veterans Day pays tribute to all American veterans—living or dead—but especially gives thanks to living veterans who served their country honorably during war or peacetime.
So to all American veterans, thank you for your service!

07/11/2018

Is your AC giving you fits during these hot days of summer? Mine was too, cutting off after a few hours of running (on my upstairs unit), so that when we were ready for bed, the temperature was in the 80s on the bedroom level, the unit wouldn’t turn back on and we were relying on fans to sleep— YIKES!!! One call to Jack Segars Heating and Air was all it took though, to get us back to sleeping in cool comfort.
Owner Brian Segars came out (the late Jack Segar’s son), checked a couple of things and immediately diagnosed my problem. It seems grass clippings had covered my outside cooling fins, and a simple removal of the outside case and a thorough rinse with water was all it needed. (And here I was thinking I was about to shell out major $$$!)
Thanks Brian! If you are in need of a trustworthy and reliable AC service this summer, call this area’s own Brian or Wendy Segars at 205-491-6363.
