Pendleton girls still perfect at Warberg Court

By ANNIE FOWLER

PENDLETON — Pendleton is 4-0 at Warberg Court after handing Burns a 59-47 nonleague loss on Tuesday night.

“The girls did a good job grinding out a win against a hard-nosed team,” Pendleton coach Tim Foster said. “Our defense was really good in stretches and fueled our offense. Presley (Greenwalt) was phenomenal in the first half. She was all over on defense and they didn’t have an answer for her at the high post. They triple teamed her at times in the second half, but the other girls came through.”

Greenwalt scored 16 of her 21 points in the first half as Pendleton jumped out to a 24-13 lead after the first quarter and 35-30 at the half.

Khimora Scott had 10 of her 18 points in the second half as the Bucks outscored the Hilanders (2-2) 24-16 to stay one step ahead. Rylee Jackson added nine points for Pendleton (4-2).

“Rylee had some big shots and was tough on defense as well,” Foster said. “It was great to see her get going a bit. Khimora got hot for us late and hit two big 3s in the fourth.”

Burns’ Bailey Temple led all scorers with 28 points, including 11 in the fourth quarter. Josie Glascock added six points.

“Their No. 0 (Jackson) had a great game and helped keep them close each time we tried to pull away,” Foster said. “These are good games for us. We’re learning how to win and what kind of intensity and energy we need to bring for 32 minutes.

Pendleton falls to Burns in overtime

By ANNIE FOWLER

BURNS — Pendleton pushed Burns to the brink, but fell short in overtime as Wyatt Sewell scored nine of his 11 points in the extra session as the Hilanders escaped with a 73-68 win.

“We were down three and Jubal (Hoisington) hit the tying shot at the end of regulation to send the game to overtime,” Pendleton coach Ron Murphy said. “The game was back and forth after our slow start. Most of the game, we did the right things to come out on top, but they shot way too many free throws (30). I’m proud of the team effort.”

Burns (6-1) led 18-17 after the first quarter, but Pendleton got back on track in the second with a 19-15 run to take a 36-33 lead at the half.

The Bucks had a 49-48 lead after three quarters, then needed Hoisington’s 3-pointer in the fourth to extend the game.

Hoisington led the Bucks (1-5) with 21 points, while Garret Reinhart added 16, Dillon Elrod 11 and Aaden Hernandez 10.

Jack Wright led the Hilanders with a game-high 27 points, while Parker Singhose added 15.

STANFIELD — In a game that had more meaning than the points, Stanfield topped Nixyaawii 67-46 on Tuesday, on Su***de Prevention Night.

“The event itself was awesome to be part of,” Stanfield coach Rylie Smith said. “When you can bring communities together for things that matter in life, that’s what competition is all about. Good fun and able to unite for a great cause.”

The game was the second annual fundraiser for the Angie Hart scholarship, which is open to all Stanfield seniors. The first two recipients were Blaine McClure and Landon Bailey, Hart’s nephew.

The event raised more than $3,300, and the Stanfield Athletics Department will round it up to $3,500.

The Golden Eagles got off to a hot start, taking a 15-13 lead after the first quarter. The Tigers (3-0) wandered back with a 23-10 scoring spree in the second quarter for a 36-25 lead at the half.

Stanfield pulled away in the second half with a 31-21 run, led by Israel Monkus, who had 10 of his 13 points in the final two quarters.

“We were a little slow to come out in the second half, but when we come defensively, there is a swarm happening,” Smith said. “Glad to get this one and onto the next. It’s a busy week for us.”

Irvin Stewart led the Golden Eagles (1-3) with 19 points, while Kash Bronson had 11 and Cashis Alferez-Bevis nine.

Antonio Galindo added 10 points for the Tigers, while Aaron Sanchez had nine, and Alex Angel and Gabriel Mendez each had eight.

MILWAUKIE — Pendleton won all three of its matches to win the Tim Patrick Duals on Saturday at Milwaukie High School.
“They showed improvement from last week, and got better as the day went on,” Pendleton coach Fred Phillips said. “I thought Wes Browning had a great day going 3-0. He weighed in at 106, but wrestled up for the good of the team at 114. He got some great competition and stepped up to the challenge.”
On the day, Hank Roy (120), Cole Roy (165), Vance Nelson (175) and Kainen Zimmerman (190) all went 3-0, pinning all of their opponents.
The Bucks defeated David Douglas 49-26 in the championship match, winning the first three matches, and ending with victories by fall at 165-215.
Pendleton opened the day with a 63-18 victory over Milwaukie, picking up five forfeits and registering five pins.
The Bucks followed with a 51-0 win over Nelson, picking up four forfeits and four pins.
