Smiles for Baby Charley

Smiles for Baby Charley Charley was diagnosed with brain cancer Pilocytic Astrrocytoma and an extremely rare neurological disorder Diencephalic Syndrome that is caused the tumors

Charley was born on August 13th 2013. She was healthy and beautiful with 10 fingers and 10 toes, she was the happiest baby Id ever seen. She was perfect! At 2 months old I started to think she was a little on the small side. I asked her doctor and he said that she was fine, she may just be a small child. At 3 months old I was even more concerned and took her back to the doctors office and in fact

she had lost weight from her last visit. We then started trying to figure out what was causing her weight loss. After many tests and scans they found a mass in her brain. We were flown to children's of Alabama in Birmingham. There they did a biopsy and December 3rd 2013 Charley was diagnosed with brain cancer Pilocytic Astrrocytoma and an extremely rare neurological disorder Diencephalic Syndrome that is caused the tumors. DIencephalic Syndrome is a very rare neurological disorder characterized by failure to thrive, abnormal thinness (emaciation), amnesia, intense sleepiness, unusual eye position and sometimes blindness. It is normally seen in infancy or early childhood but some cases have been reported in older children and even adults. Diencephalic syndrome is usually caused by a brain tumor such as a low-grade glioma or astrocytoma. Smiles for baby Charley

Sunsets at Children’s of Alabama was always my moment to pause and clear my head. It started the very first time Charley was admitted and diagnosed at just 3 months old. Since then, sunsets have become my favorite part of the day. There’s something about the way the sky changes that refreshes my soul.

Charley Girl September 19, 2017

We used to have such a good time at the infusion center. It was always warm and welcoming exactly the way it should be. Just a month later, in October 2017, our perfect little hospital “adopted” a new name. At first, it seemed like an exciting change, but over the last couple of years of Charley’s life, that change slowly turned the place into something colder, sadder.

We could no longer wait for lab results in the comfort of the infusion center. Instead, we were left in the cold, hard waiting room or wandering the halls or sometimes even leaving to go across the street to the mall, which was so exhausting for Charley.

Still, I will never forget the incredibly kind and dedicated people who worked there and made such a difference in our lives. It’s been almost six years since I’ve truly been back to the hospital. Maybe things have improved since then, or maybe new patients won’t notice the change because they never knew how warm and special it once was.

Sacred Heart will always hold a very special place in my heart. But for now, I don’t see myself going back anytime soon.

Charley's hands were extremely sensitive; often, contact with wet substances would induce nausea and gagging. I always enjoyed fidgeting with slime, so naturally Charley was curious. It ended up being a fantastic OT tool for her. September 15, 2018
