I couldn't sleep.

On the final night of our 3 powerful days of filming this episode in Rock Valley, Iowa, I woke up in my hotel room at 2:30a... and I couldn't sleep.

I kept thinking about the people we'd met, all they had gone through, and their strength as a community.

So, at 2:30a, I started writing THIS (watch video) ⬇️

CONTEXT on the Episode's opening sequence...

Rock Valley is the Fastest Growing Small Town in Iowa, so we wanted to establish what makes this community so attractive (people, local business, manufacturing, the outdoors). Then, we used a slow "Fade To Black" to signify the everyday peaceful nature of this town.

It was then - in the middle of the night on June 22, 2024 - that this town was abruptly woken up to Tornado sirens (conveyed by the sirens & dark music).

We kept the screen black and utilized a couple of frantic voicemails to give the feel of what it was like that early morning: it was pitch black, so people were confused & scared.

When the light finally lifted later that morning people found their homes & businesses destroyed... and their lives changed forever.

What happens next, though, is the HEART of the episode because we see this flood will NOT define this community, but rather their spirit, strength, and resilience will.

🤠 Viewers are saying this scene is: "City Slickers" meets "Yellowstone."

THE FULL STORY:
I didn't really know what we were doing here on the Wisness Ranch near Watford City, ND except there would be horses, cattle, and a hot iron.

I didn't know why or what.

Helps explains the baseball hat & Nike shoes. 😂

What’s On Your Bulletin Board?

Honored to speak at TEDxStCloud and share on the power of positive, authentic storytelling.

When I was a kid my Grandma Hepola had a bulletin board on the wall in her kitchen. Each week, she’d cut out articles from the local newspaper and pin them up on that bulletin board. As I would stand there reading them, my Grandma would always come up to me and say, “Cory, just remember when you get older that you are in the newspaper for something good and not for something bad.”

As I’ve gotten older, I now understand what my Grandma was doing.

The Bulletin Board in her kitchen was her platform. Each week, she’d cut out the positive stories from her community - the new business downtown, the young couple getting married, the high school team making it to State. My Grandma was proud of her small town and she was telling the world: “This… is MY TOWN.”

What’s On Your Bulletin Board?

Are you pinning up the positive stories? Or, are you cutting out the negative stories?

It matters because you are your community’s - small town, neighborhood, family, school, church, etc - greatest advocate. What you say sends a message to the rest of the world.

My Town Series is inspired by my Grandma Hepola’s Bulletin Board. Through authentic stories we are working to break down the popular misconceptions with small towns showing why more and more people are choosing this wonderful life!
