We're setting up for a lovely holiday weekend! The latest Drought Monitor has upgraded Warren and McKean Counties to a Severe Drought. Moderate drought conditions continue for Crawford County and southern Erie County, while the Erie lakeshore is into the dry risk zone.

There will likely be isolated to scattered showers through the weekend, but unfortunately, they won’t be enough to make a big dent in the drought. The air remains very dry and stable, so rainfall should remain minimal and well-behaved overall.

🔥 Fire Safety Reminder:
If you’re doing any outdoor burning or activities involving fire, please use caution and keep an extinguisher or water source nearby. The burn ban is still in effect across New York State until October 15th.

This is a perfect example of the fall season in NWPA: Coming off of 80° for the weekend, fire weather risk with heavy downpours yesterday, right into winter alerts. ☀️🔥☔️🍂🧊
Multiple cold weather alerts have been issued by the NWS for the following counties for overnight:
🔹 Freeze Watch (Warren)
🔹 Frost Advisory (Erie, Crawford, Chautauqua, Cattaraugus)
🔹 Freeze Warning (McKean)

Temperatures (especially inland) are expected to drop below freezing tonight into early tomorrow morning, which could lead to frost and freeze conditions that may damage sensitive plants and affect outdoor plumbing or pets left outside. If you have plants, bring them indoors or cover them, and take steps to protect pipes and outdoor equipment. Make sure pets have a warm place to stay, and check on neighbors who may need assistance. It may be fall, but these chilly temps are a reminder that winter is right around the corner. Stay warm and stay safe!

Hurricane Humberto & Imelda Update:

Both hurricanes are now a Category 1 with sustained winds around 80-85mph. Humberto is expected to generate dangerous rip currents and surf across the Western Atlantic through the week. A Hurricane Watch is in effect for Bermuda for Imelda. Other coastal flood, and high surf advisories are in place for the coasts of Florida and the Carolina’s. While there is no longer a forecasted direct landfall on the US, dangerous surf and swimming conditions are likely throughout this week.

🌀 Tropical Update – Hurricane Humberto & Invest 94‑L (Possible Imelda) 🌀

Humberto is now a major (Category 3) hurricane with 115mph maximum sustained winds. Dangerous surf, rip currents, and coastal flooding are very possible along the East Coast into next week as it continues to travel WNW.

Invest 94‑L (potential Imelda) is likely to become the next named storm within the next day or so. It could head toward the Southeast U.S. next week with heavy rain, gusty winds, and flooding risk — even if it doesn’t become a strong storm. With the close proximity of the two storms, they also could interact with each other in what is known as the Fujiwhara Effect.

Regardless of development or strength, make sure to let friends/family know of potential impacts if they're along the East Coast, especially down towards the Carolinas, Georgia or Florida.
