One Blue Sock

Like refuse on the roadside after winter
It is possible to drive by and not see

Life serves up lost people
If we notice them
They can feel found
No one is chasing cars
Their legs are tired

We are all on one side of the white line or the other
Consider: where are you today?
Are you lost, or are you watching the roadside in case you find someone

Life is one giant lost and found
Our importance cannot be measured at face value
Which is why
we are always undervaluing our self
But we do not throw out
the one blue sock

"Everyone has two birthdays...the day you were born and New Year's Day--"
Happy New Year from The Other Herald!

NEW YEAR'S DAY

by Billy Collins

Everyone has two birthdays
according to the English essayist Charles Lamb,
the day you were born and New Year’s Day—

a droll observation to mull over
as I wait for the tea water to boil in a kitchen
that is being transformed by the morning light
into one of those brilliant rooms of Matisse.

“No one ever regarded the First of January
with indifference,” writes Lamb,
for unlike Groundhog Day or the feast of the Annunciation,

this one marks nothing but the passage of time,
I realized, as I lowered a tin diving bell
of tea leaves into a little body of roiling water.

I admit to regarding my own birthday
as the joyous anniversary of my existence
probably because I was, and remain
to this day in late December, an only child.

And as an only child--
a tea-sipping, toast-nibbling only child
in a colorful room this morning--
I would welcome an extra birthday,
one more opportunity to stop what we are doing
for a moment and reflect on my being here on earth.

And one more birthday might be a consolation
to us all for having to face a death-day, too,
an X in a square
on some kitchen calendar of the future,

the day when each of us is thrown off the train of time
by a burly, heartless conductor
as it roars through the months and years,

party hats, candles, confetti, and horoscopes
billowing up in the turbulent storm of its wake.

How The Law of Reciprocity Can Make or Break Your Business - Reboot Authentic

This December, you can be that giving person without any expectation or motive. Gifts like that are rarely forgotten over a lifetime and can multiply the "pay it forward" mentality, silently growing the good side of our humanity. Gifts like that can even be lifechanging. Follow your intuition in 2015 and give whenever you can, even if all you have to give are your encouraging words.

Learning the right way and the wrong way to take advantage of The Law of Reciprocity gives you a powerful advantage in growing your business.

WRITING PROMPT FOR POSSIBLE 2015 ISSUE THEME:
What should be in the news.
Open to interpretation...

Writing Prompts:

1.) List poem of headlines, modified to be more appropriate, or left as they are. Perhaps they tell their own story and when placed in proximity make their own points.

2.) Poem or story or essay about something that should be in the news more, but isn't (nothing conspiracy-based, please.)

3.) Article about your experiences working in the media (short articles; please familiarize yourself with The Other Herald by getting a sample copy- see comments on this post.)

4.) Compare and contrast two media stories appearing during the same week. Use your creativity to find added meaning.

Ex:
THIS ISSUE THEME WAS INSPIRED BY THE WEEK'S NEWS HEADLINES, a few I have paraphrased here:

• Overzealous Country Music Fan Rips Clothes, Gets Swatted Away, Public in Outrage
• Airliner Carrying Civilians and 100 AIDS Researchers Shot Down Over Russia-Ukraine Power Struggle
• FBI Freed 168 U.S. Children in Last Week's Sex Trafficking Raids
• Federal Judge Rules No-Fly List Process is Unconstitutional
• NTSB: Too Much Technology, Too Little Training Caused Last Year's Asiana Flight 214 Crash
