Ever since getting a great photo of my son and his girlfriend sharing a moment on a park bench, couples on park benches stand out to me like sore thumbs and I just can’t walk away.

San Diego, Day2. I approached everyone I took photos of, showed them the back of the camera and offered to send the photos to them after I returned to Michigan. Some posed for more intentional portraits.

Day 2 of my San Diego trip. I spent much of the day wandering the Sunset Cliffs on the north end of Point Loma. When I wasn’t set up on a tripod for a landscape composition and moving from spot to spot, I had a 50mm lens on the camera and just grabbed photos of opportunity, most of which were just people doing their thing…like this young man.

My trip to California was to reunite with Marines from 3/1 with whom I served in Somalia. I also took the opportunity to turn it into a landscape photography trip. I’m usually annoyed when people wander into my landscapes, but these surfers completed the images. As landscapes they were kinda mundane, actually. But as environmental people pictures, I really quite like them.

Abby and I playing in Greenwood Cemetery just before the gates closed. These are wildly different edits, obviously, but the left is 20 minutes before sunset, the right is just after sunset. Sunset was 6:38, the gates automatically close at 7:00. We had to hustle for the shot.

Calling all veterans: I have an ongoing portrait project that I have dubbed “Vestiges of Service,” wherein I sit down with veterans and make portraits while we have a conversation, veteran to veteran about our experiences as members of the warrior class.
When people thing of “Vestige of Service” they envision a dusty uniform or some trinket brought home from far off lands. But it is most profoundly the intangible that we carry within.
If you are a veteran, I’d love to sit down with you and hear your story and retell it with my camera.
Our countrymen should know that the price of war is paid long after the rifles fall silent.

This second shoot with Abby was a hoot.

I still suck at getting portrait BTS.
I’m getting better at it.
…that’s a lie.

You don’t need a grand location for a great portrait. A random patch of dying ferns on the roadside will do nicely.

Don’t bore me and I’ll give you everything you want (photographically speaking, that is).
