Snow The Goalie: Revisionist History? - Crossing Broad

Ant, Russ, and Bundy react to Bob Clarke's comments about drafting Nolan Patrick, inferences made about Jay O'Brien and Morgan Frost, Ron Hextall's style as GM, and missed opportunities. The guys then discuss just how much of the reaction on social media has been genuine and how much has been revisionist history. Finally, the guys react to the Ed Snider birthday blowback, the NHL's inconsistent rescheduling of games, and Elliotte Friedman's speculation that the Flyers could look to move Claude Giroux.

On this episode of Snow The Goalie: A Flyers Podcast, the guys react to Bob Clarke's comments on Nolan Patrick, Ron Hextall, and more.

Flyers Fire Alain Vigneault - What's Next? - Crossing Broad

Head coach Alain Vigneault was fired Monday morning by the Flyers. Also let go was assistant coach Michel Therrien. Assistant Mike Yeo takes over as head coach starting tonight, but only on an interim basis, I’m told.

This is what happens when you have an embarrassing performance like a 7-1 loss to Tampa Bay on home ice to extend a losing streak to eight straight games.

“Shore Night” was the big promotion for the Flyers on Sunday. They just didn’t tell you the shore experience was going to be akin to summer Friday rush hour traffic on the A.C. Expressway.

Should The Flyers Fire Coach Alain Vigneault? - Crossing Broad

"But things have gone due south in a free fall since, and over the course of the past two weeks, things have gotten ugly.

It’s gotten to the point now where speculation is starting to brew that coach Alain Vigneault could be on the hottest of hot seats. That there’s a head coach in waiting who wants the gig (Rick Tocchet) and that the Flyers are running out of patience."

The pitchforks and torches have arrived earlier than expected. A six-game losing streak will do that, and the Flyers suddenly find themselves in a very precarious place – being a team that is irrelevant by the holiday season. General Manager Chuck Fletcher went all-in over the summer re-shaping hi...

Roller Coaster Ride: Thoughts from Lightning 4, Flyers 3 (SO) - Crossing Broad

Thursday night's game between the Flyers and Lightning held a special significance as it was Hockey Fights Cancer Night, including a pregame ceremony and multiple moving tributes throughout the night. What ensued what a roller coaster ride of a game that featured highlight goals, incredible saves, a breakneck OT, and ultimately ended with a Flyers loss in a skills competition. Let's take a look at what went down.

Head Stand! Thoughts on Carter Hart's incredible performance and Flyers 2, Hurricanes 1 - Crossing Broad

"Goalies, on the other hand, are often drafted later and are developed by teams from a young age to become good at their jobs. There's no guarantee that these selections will hit, and they definitely take longer to bear fruit, but they are also a much lower risk with a much higher reward and can be developed while a team is even good or excellent.

This is a far more reliable path to success. There's no question that I am right and my bloviating, hot-take artist of colleague isn't.

I give you Carter Hart."

There was a debate in the Crossing Broad Slack channel recently between myself and another erstwhile writer about the value of specific hockey players. I argued that the most important piece for any hockey team is a goaltender, hands down, and that teams that build from the goal line out will ultima...

Power-less Play: Maple Leafs 3, Flyers 0 - Crossing Broad

A veteran head coach is backed by the clout he’s earned by racking up wins. Sometimes that veteran head coach builds a staff with other veteran coaches, who choose to implement tactics that are mind-numbing.

In hockey, perhaps more than any other sport, there’s a nod to the importance of veterans. A veteran front office executive is given more leeway than a younger counterpart. A veteran player has built equity with a fanbase if his play drops off or a lower-tier veteran player has forged relationship...

Not The Best Ending: Thoughts After Panthers 4, Flyers 2 - Crossing Broad

Saturday night's hockey game between the Flyers and Panthers was reminiscent of an old-time, heavyweight boxing match.

No, there wasn't any fisticuffs, or glove-dropping to get the fans all in a lather.

But rather that it was two talented teams, bringing the game to one another, trading blows, and seeing who could score the most points with the hardest punches.

Flyers' New Second Line Is Just FAB-ulous - Crossing Broad

Through two games, this trio has made Vigneault look like a genius. And with the acronym representing the first letter of each of their last names as well as serving as a good descriptor for how they’ve played, the FAB line has been the most impressive story of the first week of the season.

When the Flyers announced that Kevin Hayes would miss the first month of the regular season with an abdominal injury, there were many questions as to who would fill the void as a second line center. Many thought it would be prospect Morgan Frost, a former first round draft pick with high-end skill.....

Kraken Skulls: Flyers Spoil Dave Hakstol's Return to Philadelphia - Crossing Broad

For Dave Hakstol, Monday night must have felt like old times. There he stood behind the bench as an NHL head coach at the Wells Fargo Center, though this marked the first time he’d done so as a visiting coach. Unfortunately for Hak, the result marked the 63rd time he’d lose a regular season game in front of the Philadelphia faithful.

After mounting a furious comeback following a horrific second period in their season opener that saw the team pull back an improbable point, the Philadelphia Flyers came out in front of a raucous crowd on Monday night with a renewed sense of purpose. What followed was a number of things that simply....

Flyers Don Oskar Lindblom Jerseys for Hockey Fights Cancer Night Warmups - Crossing Broad

Before their game against the New York Islanders even began, the Flyers paid a special tribute to their teammate as they themselves came out of the tunnel wearing purple Hockey Fights Cancer sweaters bearing Lindblom's name and the number 23:

When Ed Snider owned the team-you knew he cared. No increase in ticket prices when they missed the playoffs, and even though it wasn't perfect, you knew he was trying to like to win a Cup every year-I know we're in a cap world now, but this is pathetic from the top down. More concerned about a mascot and pilfering money from people than the product on the ice. Many of us live and die with this team, through all the ups and downs because of the loyalty to Snider family always shoed the fans; they understood the relationship between the team and its fans and took that role seriously. Comcast/corporate ownership has destroyed the team and s**t all over the lifetime loyal fans. I'm so fed up with this.

Former Philadelphia Flyers forward Patrick Sharp takes Ant and Russ behind the scenes of the record-setting brawl between the Flyers and Senators on Snow The Goalie: A Flyers Podcast:
The 2003-04 Flyers were in the midst of an incredibly successful 101 point season that would see them make it all the way to Game 7 of the Eastern Conference Finals against the Tampa Bay Lightning, when the Ottawa Senators came to town for a potential playoff preview on March 5, 2004. What ensued was the largest brawl in NHL history, one which set a record for penalty minutes in a single game with 419. Former Flyer Patrick Sharp pulled back the curtain on what led up to the famous encounter on Snow The Goalie: A Flyers Podcast.
