Electronic Music Education and Preservation Project
Are you a KEITH EMERSON fan? Here's the backstory that explains how his Moog and Hammond organs ended up at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC. Have you seen this exhibit yet? We're halfway through the run, so get your move on! It wraps up on October 1st and then his gear comes back home to us. :)
Hey there! This is Drew from Philly Sound Studios. Are you into vintage amplifiers, effects and synthesizers? After Mariano and I closed up the studio, I took the position of Director at the nonprofit Electronic Music Education and Preservation Project. I invite you to check out our page and stay in the loop by giving it a 'like'. If you like historically significant vintage gear, you'll love EMEAPP!

We're exited to have BRONNIE here and you're invited! She'll be performing live and doing a meet & greet, come on down and enjoy.
Thanks to all for the kind thoughts on our closing! The list of equipment for sale has been posted on my site, click on the "RECORDING EQUIPMENT FOR SALE" link on my page and have a look. It will be updated every few days, so check back often. -Drew

We’re closing up shop.
Mariano Mattei and I have decided to close down Philly Sound Studios to pursue new and exciting business opportunities. While we had a blast with the studio, life has taken us into new and exciting directions. I am looking forward to resuming my worlds of music production, studio design and music education, please contact me directly if you would like to discuss your project. Mariano is going full-bore with his new venture in Point Breeze, Mattei Family Pizza. He is working it hard, providing Molise-style pizza and other awesome Italian delights to a voracious fan base. Stop in and grab a pie, it’s delicious!
The studio will be operating through July 19th, so get your projects done while you can! Send us a message to book time while this amazing studio is still together. I will be selling most of my gear, console, amps, mics, Steinway, Hammond, rack gear, stands, cables, etc, message me if you’re interested in anything.
Thank you for years of support and for bringing such amazing music through our doors, it was our honor working with you! - Drew Raison
What a tough month. RIP Bob Gordon, he was a great intern both here at Philly Sound Studios and Big Sky Audio. Your humor was epic and love of music strong. Our hearts go out to his family, friends and workmates. :(
5,000 likes, THANK YOU! :) We are proud to be a part of the vibrant Philadelphia music scene, we thank you for your support. :)
How exciting to walk into the studio and see this monster in action! It's music video shooting time, powered by this RED video rig on a big jib. Can't wait to see some of this footage! Mariano Mattei is at the helm, providing backline and the multitrack live recordings of the full band and vocalist. Gonna be a stunner!

Happy 1 year anniversary to our Trident Vector console! It was tough to let go of our beloved Neve V55 desk, but what what a great choice! This vintage 1986 monster really upped our production game, especially on complex sessions. Special thanks to super genius Jeff Chestek for the beautiful installation and to Kostadin Kamcev for bringing her back to life. Extra props to George A Hajioannou of Studio Logic Sound for encouraging us to go for it!
Talk about retro atmospheric tones! This is a Jerry Jones Coral electric sitar with sympathetic strings and a buzz bridge. The amp is an early 1960s Gibson RVT 79, it is STEREO and has an uber-creepy reverb! This pair is twangy, syrupy and thick with a unique vibe. Try them out on your next visit!
Interested in RIBBON MICROPHONES? Here is a shootout we did featuring the new Stager Microphones SR-1A and SR-2N along with a Fathead (w/Lundahl upgrade) and a standard AKG C414ULS. You can really hear the warmth and fullness of the ribbons up against the bright C414.
Our guys Tom Conran and Robby Webb did a bang up job creating this shootout. The mics were hung at 6' at the 1:00 position from the drummer perspective. All four mics were sent through channels on our vintage Trident Vector console and SSL i/o, no EQ, outboard gear or plugins were used.
We are not dealers for Stager Microphones, we just love well made and amazing sounding mics. Let us know if you would like to check them out in person!
Audio samples of the Stager SR-1A and SR-2n ribbon microphones, compared with the Fathead ribbon (Lundahl upgrade) and a standard AKG C414ULS. Engineered by Tom Conran and Robby Webb at Philly Sound Studios.
It was great having the The Tommy Froelich Trio in the studio with their brand of honest blues rock. Rich King was the pilot, assisted by Jordan R and Tony Yoo. Drew Raison mixed and mastered it at his studio in the woods, give it a listen, these guys are hot. Do it, Tommy!
Time Well Spent , a Blues album by Tommy Froelich Trio on ReverbNation
Here is the elusive Stager Microphones SR-1A ribbon in its natural habitat during a session with the band Sonnder. Our guy Robby Webb did a killer job assisting producer/engineer Marc McKlusky. You can see Sonnder tomorrow night, May 20th, at the TLA on South Street, don't miss it!
Yes, this rig sounds as it looks, honest and genuine. The Les Paul guitar paired with an early 1970's Marshall 1/2 stack is a staple of the rock and blues world. It regularly rattles the rafters here at Philly Sound Studios. 🤘
With tone for days, this classic rig is very popular with bass players at Philly Sound Studios. Here is our 1978 Fender Precision Bass paired with a thunderous early 1970s Ampeg V4B amp and SVT cabinet. The red box on top is a REDDI vacuum tube interface that brings a stunning direct signal to the console.
The only amp that'll crush this one is Mark Chaplin's vintage Ampeg SVT head, but it takes two people to move it! Every time we turn it on, the skyscrapers downtown dim a bit. 🤣

Really excited to have two Stager Microphones in the house! We just recorded a shootout on drums, wait till you hear the results! It won't surprise you that they sound amazing. :) Wanna check them out? Shoot us a private message.
It was great hosting the new Low-Stress Recitals for South Philly School of Music & Arts on Saturday, we look forward to some of these students becoming clients of the studio someday!
Congrats to all the students who participated in our first Low-Stress Recitals on Saturday! We had three small sessions, under an hour each, with tons of family members and friends in the audiences. We can't wait till the next ones in November! :)

Yeah, baby. Somebody get this jawn plugged in. :)
We're psyched to have the band Voltheque back in the studio to shoot the video for their new single, Unearthed. With Linden Leonardo behind the lens and Drew Raison behind the speakers, this jawn is gonna look as good as it sounds. ;)

Some folks know our Mariano Mattei as the guy from the Food Network show “Cooks vs Cons”, others know him as a musician, songwriter, producer and studio guy. But did you know that Mariano has been secretly creating a genuine Molise-style Italian pizza joint featuring a handmade brick pizza oven? It’s true! He and his father, Angelo, have created Mattei Family Pizza at 1260 Point Breeze Avenue in Philly, you NEED to check it out!
Grand Opening weekend starts this Friday and you’re invited. Live entertainment, fun for the kids and some of the best food ever! Try the Arrosticini (roasted lamb skewers), prepared as they are in Civitella Casanova, Italy. Enjoy! :)

Rich King snapped this pic last evening with the songs of ice cream trucks playing in the background. The trees in our front courtyard are starting to wake up, it's a subtle reminder that we need to fire up the lawnmower. :)

Do it, Jesse! Here's a fresh article written by Jesse Klapholz about the history of jazz recording and the influence of engineer Rudy Van Gelder. Thanks to SonicScoop for hosting the article, great stuff!
Jesse Klapholz of Melrose Mixin' Masters shares his unconventional but well-researched take on the legacy of famed recordist Rudy Van Gelder. Was he an innovator, a master craftsman, or something else entirely?
Thanks to the folks at Mix Magazine for the mention! :) The session from the photo is the band StoneBaby, produced and engineered by Ben McGuinn.

Major electrical upgrades are complete with more in the near future! We've been concentrating our efforts on lowering our noise floor to achieve a higher grade of dynamics. What does that really mean? Better sound! Couple that with the freshly rebuilt power supplies on our new Trident Vector console and you've got a winner. :)
