In Brazil, a couple parked their car at a scenic viewpoint in Venda Nova do Imigrante after leaving a party. The ground beneath them was slick from rain, and the car began to shift on the muddy slope. When the pair moved inside, the vehicle lost balance and suddenly tipped forward.

The car plunged into a ravine below, crashing through the vegetation before coming to a stop at the bottom. Rescue crews arrived quickly, but the impact had been severe. Authorities later confirmed the tragic sequence was caused by the unstable, rain-soaked terrain rather than mechanical failure.

SPORTS HEROES: Top 50 Black Athletes

40. Roberto Clemente

1,305 RBIs in his career (1955–72), the seventh-most in that span
Pittsburgh has a Roberto Clemente statue next to the bridge bearing the same name. South Boston has a bronze bust, Chicago and Detroit have schools, and Puerto Rico and Nicaragua have athletic complexes named after the Puerto Rican baseball legend. But Clemente is honored for being more than a sportsman. That’s not to say the Pirates right fielder wasn’t great. Among the first group of Latino MLB stars, Clemente was a 15-time All-Star who won four batting titles, 12 Gold Gloves, and MVP awards in the regular season and the World Series. Pitchers hated facing him (he had 3,000 hits and a .317 career batting average). Base runners feared his cannon of an arm, which preserved the second of his two championships. Clemente also was a humanitarian. He accompanied a 1972 relief flight he arranged to help the people of Nicaragua after a deadly earthquake. The plane, overloaded, crashed shortly after takeoff. No one survived. Clemente’s body was never found. Yet the memory of the Hall of Famer and Presidential Medal of Freedom winner lives forever.

Joe Gans was born in Baltimore, Maryland, on November 25th, 1874. He got into boxing and had his first pro-fight when he was 17.

He was willing to fight all challengers, and on January 7th, 1895, he fought two men in one day and beat them both.

He topped that feat on August 24th, 1897, when he fought five men in one day and won each fight by technical knockout.

He fought for the colored lightweight title on September 27th, 1897, but lost.

Three years later, he got a world lightweight title shot, but he lost to Frank Erne.

The two met again on May 12th, 1902, but this time, Gans was the victor with a first-round knockout.

He became the first African American boxing champ of the 1900s and the first U.S.-born African American boxing champ.

He defended the belt 15 times but lost it in 1908 when Battling Nelson knocked him out.

The two rematched two months later, but Gans was knocked out again.

He only fought one more time after that. He was sick and died of tuberculosis on August 10th, 1910, when he was 35.

During his career, he fought 197 times. His record was 157 wins, 12 losses, 22 draws, and six no contests.

He is considered by many to be the best lightweight boxer of all time.

He was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1990 and has a statue at Madison Square Garden.

St. Paul native Brittney Baker makes history, becoming the first African American woman captain in the fire department since 1855.
-
Baker aimed for achieving personal success, not breaking records. “It wasn’t necessarily to be the first that was so big for me, it was like, ‘OK, I accomplished the goal that I had,’” Baker told KARE11.
