Krupa's Tavern celebrates (probably) 100 years serving Fairmount

"A locals’ place with a perpetually shifting group of twenty-something frequenters who discover it, there have been two rules throughout the bar’s lifespan: No cursing, and low-enough prices that no drinks are given out for free. Regulars can attest this remains true in 2021."

There’s no doubt the local favorite is one of Philly’s oldest woman-run bars.

Road rash: E-Z Park owners settle with city, fix sidewalk after land grab whistleblow

“To see something like (that story), it was horrible because we don’t do things like that on purpose. We meant no harm. We’re not like that. All of our locations are in beautiful shape. We don’t want to break the law on purpose. We got some reaction from people in City Hall, which we don’t like to get. I just hope they see this follow-up story.”

Fairhill has smart vision (and backing) for an underused park. So why so much initial resistance from the city?

My latest for PhillyWeekly is about a soccer program and residents in North Philly who want to reclaim a green space in their neighborhood, and the city (possibly) finally buying in. http://www.philadelphiaweekly.com/news/fairhill-has-smart-vision-and-backing-for-an-underused-park/article_7dc19068-f4e7-11e9-9d7e-239d28f7d57b.html

Spot hero: Parking giant E-Z Park stole public land for personal gain — for years — busted by tipster

“One day a couple months ago, I saw an elderly gentleman struggling on the passenger side of his car. He got a younger gentleman out and into a wheelchair. That was it: they realized they couldn’t get down the sidewalk. That got me really angry.”

This is a story about a private company seizing public land – apparently without seeking, or receiving, permission – to turn a heftier profit than that which it’s already turning

Former officers: Openly racist Montgomery County police chief, deputy rule by intimidation

This story was unique insofar as the volume of officers willing to speak up -- whether on or off the record -- and be critical of two of their own. It speaks to an unwillingness to let bad apples continue to sully their profession's reputation. I respect their decision to speak out, and hope you do too.

In New Hanover Township, a former cop talks about racist slights directed at his family because his wife is Asian

Paralegal: Center City law firm fired me for complaining about sexual harassment, bullying

"After her father died in June, 'Leffler began daily deliveries of apple slices and peanut butter to my desk, once accompanied with a note, written in his own beady handwriting, which said, ‘The apple was delicious! I wonder how you taste?’ She provided a photo of that Post-It note as evidence."

Veronica Fortunato thought she was meeting with HR to discuss 'hostile work environment,' but was fired on the spot. The practice denies her accusations
