'Operation Breadbasket'

"Operation Breadbasket, program begun in 1962 by the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) that aimed at improving the economic status of African Americansthrough a boycott of white-owned and white-operated businesses that refused to employ African Americans or to buy products sold by African American-owned businesses. After initial successes, the program gradually increased in scope until the early 1970s.

Leon Sullivan, pastor of Zion Baptist Church in Philadelphia, is often credited with developing the strategy at the centre of Operation Breadbasket. After witnessing a boycott Sullivan led in Philadelphia in 1958, the SCLC asked him to organize a similar campaign in Atlanta. The campaign there, which began in 1962 and represented the start of Operation Breadbasket, won promises of 5,000 jobs at local companies. In the wake of that success, the SCLC established similar campaigns in other Southern cities. It also targeted Chicago, placing the civil rights activist Jesse Jackson in charge of its efforts in that city in 1966. Jackson led a campaign that focused on white-owned grocery, soft drink, and dairy companies that made large profits in African American neighbourhoods. Jackson also advocated support of African American banks as a route to economic development for black communities. At those banks, he argued, African American business owners would be less likely to face discrimination when applying for loans.

The strategy pursued in each Operation Breadbasket campaign followed a similar pattern. SCLC leaders began by sending letters to companies so as to gather information about employment categories and numbers, as well as the numbers of African Americans employed. They usually found that African Americans were either excluded from employment entirely or relegated to the lowest-paying jobs. Leaders then attempted to educate companies about the effects of employment discrimination and low wages on black families, such as poverty and inadequate housing. Companies that refused to change their hiring practices were targeted for a boycott.

HOW I SEE THINGS

My name is James L. Dennis Jr., I have lived in Philadelphia PA all my life. I Started in Photography in the Army in 1973 taking pictures in Black and White and developing them myself. Enrolled at Antonneli Professional School of Photography in 1975. I completed 1 year. I am running my own business in Photography and Video Production with My own equipment, HD State of the Art. February 14th while out at a concert, I met a Mother and Daughter Video team taping the event. I explained to them that was in there field working to grow my business while helping others grow there’s . The Daughter said You Need To Come Down To PhillyCam ( People Powered Media, Community Access TV). Gave Me the web site, I became a member.

I enrolling in a 6 week TV Production Studio Crew Class and Producing and Directing. You can Check me out on You Tube under my full name James L. Dennis Jr. I,m very interest in PhillyCam and the programs offered for the members. Since becoming a PhiilCam member in February 2015 unto the present date, January 2019, I haveVolunteered my time to help others with their productions.

The first season with Ernest Owns Talk Show, (Earnestly Speaking) I taped with my equipment using two camera's in the studio by myself. Ernest first called me a Director in the first season, but I mostly was the Technical Director. In season #2 I was The Director and Technical Director. I Directed Earnestly Speaking for 2 seasons. Ernest was a Talk Show Host, he didn’t have traditional guest. The people who were in his audience was His guest. He would present a topic and then would ask the audience what do they think. I really enjoyed Directing on Ernest's Show, it started the ball rolling for Producing and Directing. I was fortunate to have been chosen to work with Ernest whom I believe is one of best Producers at Phillycam.

Theres always new opportunities at PhillyCam for advancement. Meetings, Workshops allow you to venture out in other directions in Media. So thats what I did. I decided to give PhillyCams street news program called (PhillyCam Vioces) a looking over. I started volunteering helping others with there projects mostly as Camera Technical Director. I starting out as a Camera Man. Camera #2 for Ali Hackett, Salt Pepper... and Memories. Chef Trek Adventures whom I started as a camera operator and moved on to become Technical Director and Director for 3 shows. Other Projects Ive crewed on, Philadelphia takes on the Pope, street interviews of passers by and the homeless. College Signing Day at Temple University, Betsey Rose for PhillyCam News team. The Workshop School Gateway project.
