Spirit Readers:

With heavy hearts, we regretfully inform you that Spirit News has closed its doors and ceased publication. It's been an amazing ride and we'll forever be indebted to our neighbors and readers — without you, we wouldn't have been able to tell all of the incredible stories we've told over the years.

As the media landscape continues to change in Philadelphia, remember that power is in the hands of the people. Remaining informed and civically engaged is of the utmost importance to citizens of the Riverwards, Philadelphia, the United States and the World.

While we are no longer around to provide you with the best (and worst) news concerning our neighborhoods and city, we urge you to remain engaged and to keep questioning authority — that's how change happens.

Until next time, Philadelphia. Don't forget to be the "Mouse that Roared."

**People and their Plants in 19th Century Port Richmond (Philadelphia)** - A FREE Archaeology Day community history talk on plants and plant use in early Philadelphia. Sat. Oct 6th. at 10:43am at the National Constitution Center's Kirby Auditorium. Archaeologists recently excavating in the Port Richmond neighborhood of Philadelphia discovered 150+ year old seeds. These seeds help us better understand how people used plants during the 19th century. Just as today, plants were eaten as food, taken as medicine, used for decoration, or simply reflect the natural environment of a location. Archaeologists Danial King and Alexandra Crowder (from AECOM-Cultural Resources) will talk about discovering these seeds while working on the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation’s I-95 highway improvement project and will share what the seeds tell us today about plants and people living in mid-19th century Philadelphia. This is one of many new archaeological discoveries being shared with the public when local archaeology researchers come together to highlight the cutting edge archaeological discoveries from our area at "Archaeology Day 2018! -Explore Philly's Buried Past!" a FREE day-long event hosted by the National Constitution Center. Drop in or Stay All Day. FREE. Program schedule, directions, and parking at https://www.phillyarchaeology.net/celebrate-archaeology-day-explore-phillys-buried-past-2018/ This event is co-sponsored by the Philadelphia Archaeological Forum and Independence National Historical Park.
