After a career as a war correspondent that brought him to Argentina, Charles Eisandrath and his family moved to Ann Arbor, Michigan. One thing sorely missing in his new life were the parilla grills he came to love in Buenos Aires. Eisandrath decided to start prototyping a grill using the traditional parrillas of Argentina as the model, but shooting for more ease of cooking over a whole wood fire rather than only over coals, known as The Grillery. Presently, under the leadership of Charles’ son, , Grillworks has expanded to selling grills for home cooking, as well as professional cooking. Learn more on their website grillworksusa.com

Melissa Lynn Torre didn’t set out to become a soap maker. While operating her former bakery, Cookie Confidential, she decided to step away and focus on autoimmune issues that plagued her for years. These health issues included eczema, and Torre began making her own soap with beef tallow to soothe her skin. This homemade soap soon landed her a meeting with Whole Foods, and thus was born. Since its inception, Torre has made it a mission to source her products from local businesses - even the beef tallow. This helps restaurants offload their waste and keep it out of landfills, all while moisturizing her customers’ skin. Check out the “Local Heroes” piece in our Spring Issue to read more about Melissa Torre and Vellum Street - and check out that cover model!
