It’s been a tough year for local farmers with some crazy weather, grants and funding cuts, and uncertain times ahead. Now, more than ever, we need to support our local farmers, farmers markets, artisans and producers before they disappear.

Check out our 2025 Philadelphia Farmers Market Guide to find your local market and for markets around the region. The tables are piled high with the bounty of the season.

We are incredibly saddened to hear of the recent passing of John Czerw. John was a true pillar of the community and an incredible example to so many. He will be missed dearly but we know his legacy will continue to inspire for generations to come.

Funeral Service Information for Thursday, June 26th:
Visitation 10am
Funeral Mass 12pm

Due to the extreme heat, John’s viewing and mass have been moved to Nativity BVM LOWER CHURCH located at 2535 E. Allegheny Avenue (corner of Belgrade and Allegheny). The LOWER CHURCH is air conditioned.

We were so fortunate to be able to document his work in our Fall 2024 issue via a wonderful words by Natalie Jesionka and striking images by . Miana shared these words after the shoot and we felt they accurately summed up John’s character and impact:

“John at Czerw’s Kielbasa met me early Thursday morning to show me the smokehouse. It was a remarkable site. I was so inspired. He showed me how he gathers wood and moves it around from time to time to keep the fire and smoke going. And also he uses this lamp to shine on the smoked kielbasa to see how things are looking. He really gets inside this smokehouse and I was [glad to be] able to share that intimate process. When the time came, I followed him into his main shop and it started to get busy so I was able to see him in action behind the counter. He is such a kind guy and so generous with his customers.”

We fell in love with this beautiful essay by Marisol Villamil as soon as we read it, and we know you will, too. A personal reflection on the book and film, ‘Like Water for Chocolate’ with illustration by .crosbycreative, Marisol shares how much this story of food as a central theme resonated from her first two screenings at the Ritz 5 - the second with her visiting abuela - all the way to today.

Give it a read in our current Spring issue or at https://ediblephilly.ediblecommunities.com/food-thought/like-water-for-chocolate-the-story-and-me/
