Drexel University announced today that 1,918 students enrolled in the first-year class for the 2025-2026 academic year, a significant drop from the 2,369 students who enrolled last year and the 2,850 the year before. The new figure represents a 20 percent year-over-year decline, surpassing the 15 percent drop between 2023 and 2024.

Despite the heavily reduced class size, part of the demographic makeup remains relatively the same. Thirty-two percent of incoming students identify as first-generation college students, aligning with recent years’ rates of 29.4 percent in 2024 and 32.0 percent in 2023.

In a statement to the university, President Antonio Merlo shared that the decline was anticipated: “In light of shifting demographic trends and national challenges in international student enrollment, the University expected a smaller first-year class and proactively aligned its planning and budget to reflect that projection.”

After replacing Barnes & Noble this past summer, Kansas City-based Rally House held a grand opening on Thursday, Oct. 9, to mark its transition as Drexel’s new campus book and apparel store. While Rally House had a “soft-opening” this past August to be ready for the school year, this event marks their official opening. 🦅⚾️🐉

Tame Impala, the music project led by multi-instrumentalist Kevin Parker, released his fifth studio album, “Deadbeat,” on Friday, Oct. 17. The album continues the shift away from the psychedelic rock Parker began his career with and further into pop and dance.

The album gets off to a solid start with opener “My Old Ways,” which tells of Parker confessing how he has given in to temptation. The track successfully fuses the psychedelic sound he is known for with the dance sound of this album. It works well as the start to the album, introducing themes of self-doubt and finishing with a suspenseful drop.

Loneliness is nothing new for Parker—it is the defining theme of his first three albums. But following the serenity of his prior album, “The Slow Rush,” one would expect that Parker would express a more nuanced view on his outcast status. Instead, Parker laments on relationship failures and self-doubt on “Deadbeat,” which gets old quickly. The otherwise laid-back track “No Reply” is dulled by self-hating lyrics that border on cringy: “You’re a cinephile, I watch Family Guy.”

The scariest thing I watched last year was not in a theater. It was a grainy YouTube video of a tampered Bible cartoon that slowly revealed something was not so Christian.

Having grown up with parents who were teenagers in the 1980s, I was subjected to endless nostalgia trips about the decade. It seems that every Gen Xer in the film industry fell into the same trap because the media in the 2010s became suddenly obsessed with the glamor and seemingly endless consumerism of that era. This was especially apparent in horror, with “Stranger Things” summoning a wave of synth-heavy suburban nostalgia. However, on the internet, things were different. Analog horror took the format and general eeriness of digital decay from media of that time and channeled it into something truly terrifying, not by celebrating the 80s, but by using its dead media formats to explore very modern fears…

Former Dragon Amari Williams makes his NBA Debut:

When Damion Lee made his NBA debut with the Atlanta Hawks on March 13, 2018, he became Drexel’s first NBA player in nearly a decade. Lee logged 15 minutes, scored 13 points, grabbed four rebounds, and shot 5-of-10 from the field (3-of-5 from three). Before him, the last Dragon to reach the league was Malik Rose, who debuted back in 1996. On Oct. 24, 2025, Amari Williams joined that exclusive company, making his debut for the Boston Celtics, seven and a half years after Lee’s first game in Atlanta...

On October 10th, Latinos for a United Campus, a student-led cultural club at Drexel, hosted a celebration for the Latino community named “El Festival del Barrio.” The event featured rich cultural foods such as empanadas de pollo y queso with a simple side of yellow rice and black beans—Hispanic staples—as well as students dancing to genres such as cumbia with a touch of new-gen music.

The festival’s major objective was to assure Latino and non-Latino Drexel students that LUC events and spaces provide a safety net for everyone. It is especially tough to be a member of a minority community when everything appears to be against them, but arts and cultural events are always valued.

A reminder to all participants of any multicultural club: it is not about ethnicity, but rather, being a part of a community…

Crafting a successful film sequel is far from a menial task. In addition to the challenges inherent to all modes of filmmaking, creators must walk the delicate line of honoring previous material while also providing a fresh experience for viewers. The horror genre is no stranger to such struggle, as very few sequels within this category manage to garner mass critical acclaim.

Through this lens, Blumhouse Production’s “Black Phone 2” provides a fascinating case study. 2021’s “The Black Phone” stands as one of the most critically and financially successful horror films of the decade thus far, and is especially commendable given its stature as an unknown IP released in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. Then, naturally, the question arises of whether “Black Phone 2” can achieve a similarly unexpected feat by overcoming the aforementioned horror sequel curse and supplying a thoughtful, creatively emboldened extension of its predecessor…

On Oct. 11, Ivan McClellan brought his 8 Seconds Rodeo to Philadelphia for the first time—a vibrant celebration of Black culture, community, and cowboy heritage. What began as McClellan’s personal photography of Black rodeo athletes has grown into an all-Black rodeo that has now been held in three major U.S. cities.

The founder of 8 Seconds Rodeo has been fascinated by cowboy culture for as long as he can remember. As a kid, he was obsessed with the 1993 film “Tombstone,” but years later, he realized something: none of the characters looked like him—or like the Black cowboys he knew existed. “There wasn’t even a Black horse in that film,” he recalled. “Even when I became aware of Black cowboys, I didn’t call them cowboys because I didn’t feel like I had the permission to.”

Enjoy another writer highlight on Audrey’s Article “8 Seconds Rodeo: celebrating black cowboy culture.” 🤠

This year marks the 14th consecutive year that US Squash has hosted the tournament in partnership with Drexel, and the fourth at the Arlean Specter US Squash Center, which opened in 2020. The center, located on 33rd and Lancaster Ave., sits right in the heart of Drexel’s campus.

Much of the relationship between US Squash and Drexel can be traced to one man: John Fry. The former president, who left Drexel in September 2024 to take over as Temple’s president, was a large factor in why squash at Drexel is where it is today…
