Jawbreaker: A documentary about Anti Cimex – the band that defined Scandinavian hardcore punk. Directed by Tomas Haglund and Oskar Sjödin, Jawbreaker spans four decades of music, chaos and retold myths. Tomas Jonsson’s iconic voice, the band’s political charge and raw dynamics form the backdrop to the story of how Anti Cimex shaped both a sound and a subculture. Through international filmmakers, archive material and newly recorded fragments, Jawbreaker takes us from Skaraborg to Kuantan in Malaysia, from DIY scenes to the Swedish Music Hall of Fame. It is a film about creative friction, a band that refused to follow the rules, and about the resonance their music has in a contemporary world that is disturbingly reminiscent of the gloom of the 1980s.

Tickets are now on sale through the PhilaMOCA website or link in General Speech bio.

EXCLAIM - Akita City, Japan. In 1985, Dogma Records, home to G.I.S.M., The Comes, The Clay, Swankys, etc., printed an ad for their upcoming releases in Doll Magazine. One of them however, a band called EXCLAIM never ended up being released. Operating in Akita city, located in the far north of Japan’s big island, EXCLAIM played political hardcore punk influenced by bands like Discharge, Crucifix and Crass, through a uniquely Japanese filter. The result is some of my favorite under the radar Japanese hardcore of all time, and has been on the label bucket list since I started. Their sole appearance on record was a single lo-fi live audio track on Gauze’s “Shodoku Gig” LP from 1987, but the band had already gone into the studio 3 times from 1985-1986 and tracked close to 20 incredible songs, that by some unfortunate turn of events never saw release. The resulting recordings are the kind of metallic ‘80s style Japanese hardcore perfection that people dream of, which bookend perfectly next to bands like G.I.S.M., Zouo, and Gastunk. These recordings will finally see a release over 40 years later in late June in the form of separate 7” and LP releases on General Speech, as well as a CD version containing both the 7” and LP. For those who have been lucky enough to come across some of these recordings in the tape trading era, this reissue is high on people’s wish list of reissues, and if you are still unaware of EXCLAIM, and have a penchant for dark ‘80s Japanese hardcore, this may be your new favorite band.

The MARGAReTS - Chiba City, Japan. In 1989 the flagship Kyushu punk bands like The Swankys had broken up, and a new wave was forming in their wake. Chiba City, and The MARGAReTS were about to deliver pound for pound with the originators in the post-Swankys era of fuzzy Japanese punk rock, building a scene of incredible and underrated bands in a similar style of raw 70s influenced punk like their close compatriots in Tokyo, The Registrators, but as with Kyushu Punk, Chiba City wasn’t about to forget the fuzz of Disorder, and Chaotic Dischord. The MARGAReTS were undoubtedly the torchbearers of this scene. Their “Hi-Tech Dinner” gigs, aesthetic, ‘70s influenced punk fashion, and signature sound acted as a center point that would influence and build up the Chiba Punk scene, which birthed bands like The C&C, Screaming Noise, Dust Noise, and dozens more. They gigged regularly, gaining a cult status, and recorded several times, but somehow never managed to release a record.

The first time I ever heard the Margarets some years ago I thought to myself, “How is this band so unknown overseas, instead of painted on the back of every jacket by anyone who ever loved a noisepunk record?” In late June, General Speech will release the career spanning album “Hi-Tech Dinner” which has been specifically remastered for vinyl. In addition, a digitally mastered CD will be released containing nearly their entire discography. I encourage you to starting painting “THE MARGAReTS” on the back of your jacket now if you want to get ahead of the curve.
