The next episode of Power of Human Stories is out featuring Christie Heimbach!

I laughed at this part of my conversation with Christie.

She looks back at being 19 years old, flying to Zimbabwe to start what would become a nonprofit, and says, “I would never let my children do this.”

I think most of us have a season we can look back on like that. We were convinced we were supposed to do something, and we probably had a lot less figured out than we realized at the time.

What I appreciated is that Christie tells this story with the perspective of someone who’s had another fifteen years to reflect on it. She can laugh at the naivety, appreciate what came from it, and recognize how much she’s changed along the way.

On the latest episode of The Power of Human Stories, Kris Cravey and I talked about beliefs, values, leadership, and culture. One of the things I’ve been thinking about since that conversation is how easy it is for organizations to say what they value, but how much harder it is to actually live those values out in a consistent way. Because at some point, people are not just listening to what leaders say. They are watching what leaders model, reward, tolerate, and correct.

And that feels especially true when things get stressful or complicated. A company can say it values innovation, healthy risk-taking, or failing fast. But what happens when someone actually fails? Is there curiosity? Is there learning? Or is there blame and fear? That is usually where culture becomes more visible. The actual lived out response.

I thought Kris had a lot of wisdom here. Now to be clear, I don't think leaders have to model everything perfectly 100% of the time. That's not a fair standard. But if there is a constant and consistent gap between what is stated and what is lived, people will feel that gap pretty quickly and make their own assessments of the health of the culture.

Kris Cravey’s episode is now live!

One of the more interesting parts of my conversation with him was our discussion around private equity and whether these kinds of businesses can still be a force for human flourishing.

A lot of people hear “private equity” and immediately think about how their favorite brands, products, or services have gone downhill in recent years because of cost cutting, layoffs, pressure, and short-term returns.

In this clip, Kris acknowledges that reality. He doesn’t shy away from examples in his own experience. But he also offers a more nuanced perspective. We talked about the tension between performance and stewardship, and whether it’s still possible to build businesses that create value while also caring well for people and helping communities flourish.

I really loved this part of our conversation. There are also plenty of other topics we dig into throughout the episode, including leadership, culture, career pivots, faith, and legacy.

There’s another episode of Vega Productions' The Power of Human Stories out today!

Kris Cravey's episode is now live. There was a lot we dug into in this conversation. Everything from Kris’ early start in seminary and his intention to go into church ministry, to his eventual pivot into corporate leadership across the energy industry, a drone startup, and private equity.

We also talked about something we’re both passionate about: culture. Kris shared some powerful examples of what healthy, and not-so-healthy, cultures actually look like when they’re being lived out.

I’ve had the chance to experience a lot of what Kris talks about. I’ve seen leaders who have built healthy cultures in their organizations while personally living out beliefs and values that align with those cultures. And I’ve also seen leaders who have struggled to keep those things aligned under stress, tension, and rapid growth.

Kris drops a lot of wisdom in this episode, and I think there’s something in it for anyone who cares about leadership, people, and the kind of culture they’re helping create.

One of the questions I asked Ethan McDowell toward the end of our conversation was what he hopes is still true of him years from now if more success comes.

Not just as an actor.
As a person.

I liked where this part of the conversation went because it pulled things back to something deeper than career momentum or recognition.

It’s easy to focus on what we want to achieve.

It’s harder, and probably more important, to think about who we want to remain while we’re doing it.

Ethan is one of those friends I've had the privilege of staying in touch with all of these years. His career has spanned a lot of ups and downs and it's so cool to finally sit down with him and hear directly from him the amazing nuggets of wisdom he's picked up along the way!

I've always wondered what it takes to persevere in creative careers, especially one as thankless as acting. There's what people see on the outside, and then there’s the real day-to-day grind behind it.

Ethan McDowell's episode of The Power of Human Stories is now live.

Ethan and I go back more than 10 years, to a season when Vega Productions was doing a lot more narrative filmmaking and cutting our teeth on short films together. Some of those projects were scrappy, ambitious, and honestly still really meaningful to me.

I’ve followed his journey from the sidelines over the years as he’s kept showing up, kept doing the work, and kept building a real acting career in Hollywood and Atlanta, working on productions like The Walking Dead, Ms. Marvel, Doom Patrol, and HBO's The Righteous Gemstones.

In this conversation, we go deeper into that journey. Not just the credits or the roles, but the mindset it takes to stay in the game, stay grounded, and stay true to who you are in an industry that can easily pull people in a lot of different directions.

At one point in our conversation in Episode 02, I asked Roland when he first realized there might actually be a path to making a living in music.

For him, it wasn’t a single opportunity or breakthrough. It was the realization that the music he loved was everywhere — in films, in television, in the stories he was already drawn to. And behind that music were composers who weren’t mythical figures, but real, attainable people doing the work.

That shift in perspective made the idea of a career in music feel possible.
