An explanation of my part in Ethel Zine & Micro-Press, which is run by my friend Sara Lefsyk, from an interview with Sara for Yellow Arrow Publishing. If I've done nothing else, I have successfully pulled Ethel's spirit halfway back into her body with my patented Fake Rituals That Really Work (TM). ☺

I'll post a link below to donate to Ethel, if you're so inclined!

What inspired you to start Ethel Zine & Micro-press?

Since I was young, I have always had to be making something, keeping my hands (and mind) busy. After I received my MFA, I’d often ask my poet friends for poems that I would then sew into little books, for the fun of it, and give out copies to each author. My friend Joanna Penn Cooper had the idea in 2018, when I was very unhappy and unstimulated, working 50 hours a week as a prep cook, that I start a small press and handmake the books. So, I did.

What is the inspiration behind the name?

When we were in grad school together, Joanna, my classmate, and I became friends. She would have me come visit her in New York City often, where she would make me eat and perform fake rituals that really worked to help pull my spirit halfway back into my body—I was dealing with a lot back then. During one of those trips, she just started calling me Ethel for no particular reason. When Joanna suggested I start the press, she also suggested I name it Ethel.

What is your mission as an indie press?

My main mission is to bring book publishing away from being mass produced by machines in some warehouse . . . back to each one being almost completely handmade [though] I do get the book innards printed by a local print shop. [With Ethel,] I also want to publish as wide a range of styles and voices as possible.

You can help support Ethel in getting out our behemoth issue 11! From Sara's fundraising post:

Ok, to be honest, running a micro press by oneself is difficult in many respects, but most recently my struggles have been with selling enough copies of books to keep the press running. I don't receive any funding from anywhere except through sales of books and subscriptions and sometimes my own money--but with a recent move to a different state, I've been struggling to find a job making enough money to even support myself. Ethel 11 is especially expensive because I send out a free contributor copy to every contributor, and this issue is really long, so printing and mailing contributor copies will be challenging.

You could be forgiven for making some assumptions about Moira Saucer's Wiregrass & Other Poems from the cover, which features hand-sewn flowers, yes actual stitches on illustrations of yellow flowers. I assumed Saucer's book might feature gentle, sensitive, introspective poems, in a style reminiscen...

About Ethel

Ethel climbs a tree alone in the dark where she makes bird noises and thinks about small animals.

Once, Ethel’s friend Joanna predicted a surprise hairdo. After that, that friend, Joanna Penn Cooper, came up with the idea to make Ethel into a zine. Joanna is an editor-at-large and a moral support expert. Many years ago, she was an Ian Curtis look-alike.

Sara Lefsyk, whose name is not Ethel, handmade each copy of Ethel. Therefore, she is a cosmic seamstress, a secret editor, and the recipient of the surprise hairdo predicted by Joanna.
