I asked my guest Unity Breathwork | Trauma Informed Breathwork Training this week what it was like to try everything for seventeen years and still not find relief.

Her answer changed how I think about the word healing.

Swipe through for a few of the moments from this conversation that I haven’t stopped thinking about.

I've been thinking about something since my conversation with Megan Ashton:

Sometimes we can be doing all the “healing things” and still be running.

Megan spent years searching for relief. And what struck me wasn't how many modalities she tried, it was her realization that so much of the searching itself had become another way not to feel.

That got me thinking.

There can be a very fine line between **seeking something that supports our healing** and believing the next thing will finally make the discomfort go away.

Maybe the question isn't always:

**“What else do I need to try?”**

Maybe sometimes it's:

**“What am I hoping I won't have to feel?”**

If you missed my conversation with Megan, we talk about searching, numbing, breathwork, the nervous system, safety, Reiki, and what it can mean to begin staying with ourselves instead of trying to get somewhere else.

For seventeen years, my guest this week tried everything to feel okay.

Yoga, Reiki, Talk therapy, Hypnotherapy, and even a week of intense plant medicine ceremonies that left her sicker than ever.

However, nothing stuck because the searching itself was keeping her nervous system on high alert.

That line stopped me cold when she said it. So many of us are taught that healing means trying harder, finding the next tool, the next teacher, the next breakthrough, but sometimes the constant searching is the very thing keeping your body from settling down enough to actually heal.

Megan Ashton found her answer in conscious connected breathwork, and in this episode she breaks down exactly what happens in your brain and body during a session, and how to know if a facilitator is actually trained to hold that space safely.

This one is full of gold, whether or not breathwork is on your radar.

The new episode is live now.

NEW EPISODE 🎙️

Megan Ashton says that for years, whenever uncomfortable emotions started bubbling up, she found somewhere else to go.

Bali. Thailand. Australia.

And when she wasn't moving, there were other ways to escape—food, alcohol, and even the constant search for the thing that would finally heal her.

Then she experienced conscious connected breathwork.

In today's episode, Megan shares what surfaced during that first session and why she believes learning to actually **feel** changed her relationship with the behaviors she had been using to numb.

But we also talk about something that doesn't get discussed nearly enough:

**Breathwork can be powerful—and powerful practices deserve care.**

Megan is a strong advocate for greater safety standards in the breathwork industry, and we talk about facilitator training, contraindications, altered states, agency, people pleasing, trauma-informed practice, and why “it's just breathing” doesn't necessarily mean it's appropriate for everyone.

And yes—we even find our way into Reiki. 😊

Megan is also offering a **FREE virtual breathwork workshop on September 27**. You can find the registration link in the show notes.

What if the search for healing can sometimes become another way to run?

My guest this week, **Megan Ashton**, spent nearly 17 years searching.

Therapy. Yoga. Reiki. Hypnotherapy. Holistic nutrition. Travel. Plant medicine.

From the outside, her life looked pretty incredible.

Inside, she was struggling with bulimia, alcohol dependence, painful relationships, and what she describes as a constant need to escape.

And then a friend suggested breathwork.

Tomorrow on **The Spiritually Curious Therapist**, Megan and I talk about what happened when she stopped searching for the next thing and began finding a way to actually stay with what she was feeling.

We also have a really important conversation about the other side of breathwork, the need for safety, screening, agency, and properly trained facilitators.

We talk a lot about being triggered.

During my conversation with Amanda Hill of Connections of Hope Counseling Center , I shared a reframe I use often, and it changed the way she saw her own nervous system in real time.

I’ve been thinking about something since my conversation with Amanda Hill.

Being able to do something yourself doesn’t necessarily mean you have to.

Amanda spent years being the person who figured things out. And when life became incredibly difficult, that independence helped her survive.

But eventually she had an experience that offered something different:

She needed someone—and they showed up.

It didn’t immediately change the way she saw herself. But over time, it became new evidence about what it could mean to depend on another person.

I think that’s an important distinction.

Healing doesn’t always mean getting rid of the strategies that helped us survive.

Sometimes it means discovering that we have more choices now.

My guest this week spent years believing that needing help meant she had failed.

Amanda Hill was a newly divorced mom raising two little kids on her own. From the outside, everyone thought she had it together. On the inside, she was barely staying afloat.

She told me it took her a long time to call her dad when she couldn’t pay her mortgage. And when she finally did, he showed up for her without judgment.

Looking back now, she sees it differently. Asking for help was never proof that she was failing. It was proof of how strong she really was.

If you’re the person everyone counts on, the one who never lets anyone see you struggle, this episode is for you.

NEW EPISODE 🎙️

There was a time in Amanda Hill’s life when she was a newly single mom with two very young children, struggling financially and trying to hold everything together.

From the outside, people thought she was doing fine.

And Amanda was very good at letting them think that.

She describes herself as hyper-independent. Asking for help felt almost impossible, even when she truly needed it.

Until she finally did.

In this episode, Amanda and I talk about that experience and what it taught her about receiving support, connection and unconditional love.

We also get into faith, hope, parenting, trauma, the nervous system, why positive thinking isn’t always enough, and how our past experiences can shape what we expect to happen next.

And we talk about the story behind the name of the counseling practice Amanda eventually created: **Connections of Hope.**
