• The concept of hosting a virtual concert for peace emerged following a homicide in West Philadelphia.
• On Saturday, February 13, 2021, Doug Payne and PHASE 5 Records were featured on a West Philly radio show named “Whistle While You Work,” hosted by “Showtime the Hype Man” and Dr. Roxanne Contee.
• The interview aimed to promote a music video titled “Our Lives Matter, Wake Up Rise Up,” which was created in the style of the iconic “We are the World” video featuring Michael Jackson, Quincy Jones, and Lionel Richie.
• After the interview, Doug Payne presented the hosts with merchandise displaying a logo of a gun cross out.
• On Sunday, February 14, 2021, which was Valentine’s Day, Dr. Roxanne Contee’s son, George Myers, was shot at 62nd and Lansdowne Avenue in West Philly.
• On February 15, 2021, Doug Payne received a message from Dr. Roxanne Contee informing him that her son George had succumbed to his injuries from the gunshot.
• On Monday, February 15, 2021, Doug Payne convened an emergency Zoom meeting to discuss the weekend's tragic event.
• During this meeting, retired Philadelphia Police Officer Shaun Wilson proposed the idea of organizing a virtual peace concert, leading to the creation of the “Wake Up Rise Live 4 Peace” concert.
• Initially scheduled for Spring 2021, the concept of the virtual peace concert quickly gained traction and reached an international audience, including Shaun Tonks in England, who recommended aligning the concert with the United Nations International Day of Peace on September 21st.
