WE CAN’T COMMEND PEOPLE LIKE DIANE SMALLS ENOUGH — There are a number of people who regularly sweep their streets and sidewalks to make their block pleasant to live on. Diane, a Block Captain, walks the 3600 block of Frankford Avenue, cleaning up in front of EVERYONE’S homes on a regular basis. It’s a big deal in a city in which the nickname ‘Filthadelphia’ is sadly accurate in many areas. Thanks for the work, pride and providing a great example, Diane!

CANCELED — The Port Richmond 2nd Annual Pierogi Fest scheduled for August 28th has been canceled. State Street Events made the announcement that the event has run into the problem of having too many vendors cancel due to Covid-19. “We did not want to have a lack of pierogi vendors again for the second year, so we think it’s best to reschedule to another date.” The first Pierogi Fest in 2019 was a victim of its own success as an estimated 10,000 people showed up for what was organized as a neighborhood event, and the pierogies sold out very quickly.

THE STRUGGLE IS REAL … and it’s no joke. People’s livelihoods are being affected by a lack of workers. Kitty’s Luncheonette on E. Somerset Street in Port Richmond has a sign posted today: “Due to short staff we won’t be able to open + operate the way we need to.” They are asking customers to check out their page before making a trip to the restaurant, and are taking things day by day. “I know it sucks!!! Believe us we know,” a Facebook post reads. “This last year has been a complete struggle! Sadly we are very short handed right now! All our food is hand made. We need the proper help to be able to operate the way we do. Only having the front staff will not do it. We are working hard to properly set up the way we need to be and to find help. For now we don’t have a job and you don’t have food.” (UPDATE: Kitty’s hopes to reopen on Tuesday, August 24th)
