Enjoy The Local's free printed grassroots newspaper online & around town Anchored by other N.I.C.E. Available free from advertisers.

The Local started in October 2014 as , a page for photos & items of interest specific to a small neighborhood in NW Philly where we live. In 2019, we changed our name to "The Local" when we branched out to Germantown & other surrounding communities. By 2021 we had teamed up with WHYY's News & Information Community Exchange program, and then in 2022, we began publishing with

one of our N.I.C.E. partners, REVIVE Media, to become Philadelphia's first grassroots collaborative newspaper. partners, The Local now features strong voices from all over the city from a variety of media platforms. A printed local news publication is crucial as the city undergrows tremendous growth & change. Philadelphia remains however one of the most segregated cities in America. The Local paper seeks to disrupt that narrative, creating an inclusive media space for conscious conversation across cultures, ages, classes, and boundaries of all kinds. ADVERTISERS Along with traditional advertising, we'll brainstorm creative, value-added engagement with our lively, diverse online community: [email protected]

EF History Lesson: Before the Fairmount Dam, the rocks here stretched all the way across and people would fish from them. When the river was swollen, the sound of water rushing over the rock could be heard for 5 miles. When calm, Native Americans would pound corn in the divots carved out by the water over time: https://quod.lib.umich.edu/m/moa/AFJ8551.0001.001?rgn=main;view=fulltext

Local Voice for NW Philly

Founded in 2014, The Local offers hyperlocal news with a “hypervocal” spin.

“East Falls Local” started as a page for photos & items of interest specific to our neighborhood of East Falls, Philadelphia. Soon after, we began sharing features on EastFallsLocal.com, and in a free publication we offered at first seasonally, and then monthly as our popularity grew. In 2017, CultureWorks of Greater Philadelphia took us under their humanities wing as a non-profit project promoting free, independent press. Thanks to a generous grant from Citizens for the Arts in Pennsylvania in 2018, we became “The Local” and expanded to highlight contributors throughout NW Philadelphia -- reporters, community leaders, and developers, as well as fiction & humor writers, memoirists, reviewers, and more.

Re-booted as nwlocalpaper.com (thanks Todd!), we’re telling the stories you won’t find in anywhere else, from the “front lines” of developing neighborhoods struggling with real issues and celebrating unique triumphs every day.

SUBMISSIONS: Authors, artists, designers, photographers, and makers of all kinds -- email [email protected] for guidelines and a “Wish List” of content we’re currently seeking. SPONSORS & ADVERTISERS: In addition to print ads and social media blasts, we offer a variety of exciting ways to connect with our diverse, highly-engaged audience. Since we’re a 501-C3 (non-profit organization), your contributions may be tax deductible! Email [email protected] for more information. Thank you for supporting free local press.
