July 4th Sin Colonias Coalition: "A Bicentennial Without Colonies" was joined by Philly Boricuas on Wednesday evening: we organized a community walk and teach-in to commemorate the historic march that took place in North Philadelphia 50 years ago on July 4, 1976. As we walked along the original march route, we were joined by activists who were present on that very day. Through their stories and experiences, we gained insights into the events that led up to this significant mass mobilization of 50,000 people.

It was truly inspiring to hear the personal stories and the causes championed by the attendees back then. It’s remarkable how this diverse group came together in North Philadelphia during the bicentennial to protest imperialism, racism, economic inequality, gender and sexuality discrimination, among other social issues that were highlighted that day. We are still fighting for the same freedom and equality that those protesters fought for 50 years ago. Although these same struggles persist, we must not forget the power of unity and diversity that brought communities together to effect change. But most importantly, we must uphold the spirit of unity, as conveyed in the words of our past, which state, “The people united will never be defeated!”

This evening, we held our community walk and teach-in. Young and old, we walked the 2-mile route of the 1976 march, with talks and great discussions about what we've learned - at the start and the finish and at stops in between. Good conversations with folks along the march route too.

A key fight in the struggle for Puerto Rican sovereignty was the "US Navy Out of Vieques" campaign, to stop the degradation of the island that the Navy was using for bombing practice and war games.

Next Friday, August 7, the BlackStar Film Festival in Philadelphia will be showing the world premiere of a film about the success of that struggle led by Puerto Rican fishermen and activists. It's called Zenón and the Rebel Boats.
